JAMES MADISON JR.(1751-1836)

James Madison Jr. was born on March 16, 1751 in Port Conway, Virginia. His mother and father were Nelly Conway and James Madison. James Madison Jr. was married to Dolly Payne Tod. The wedding took place on September 15, 1794. They had no children.H e got a degree from the New Jersey College (now called Princeton University). He was a lawyer.

He was a Democratic Republican. H eheld other government positions before he became the 4th president of the United States. He was a member of the Virginia Constitutional Convention in 1776, a member of The Continental Congress from 1780 to 1783,a member of Virginia Legistrature from 1784 to 17 86, a member of The ConstitutionalConvention in 1787, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1789 to 1797, Secretary of State from 1801to 1809, and from 1811 to 1817.

James Madison became president with 122 electoral votes. His other competitors were Charles C. Pinckney, who only got 47 votes, and George Clinton who only had 6 votes.

In 1812, Madison was reelected.
