Career Planning Guide

Introduction

The Personnel Commission is providing this Career Planning Guide to assist you in identifying career paths within the Los Angeles Unified School District's Classified Service. This guide is also a resource for identifying colleges and training programs that offer the course work, degrees, and training sessions necessary for career progression. You are in charge of your career and only you can manage it. Your interests, knowledge, training, personality, unique skills, and your short and long-term objectives are your primary guides. When considered together with the Career Planning Guide, they can help you make effective career choices. The Personnel Commission hopes the Career Planning Guide will be a useful tool in planning your career within the LAUSD's Classified Service.

How to Use This Publication

The first section of this guide provides Career Charts which graphically portray typical career paths within specific fields. Each chart identifies usual entry points into a career as well as possible promotional opportunities. In using the charts to plan possible career paths, it is necessary to note the minimum qualifications required for each promotional level. Given your skills and career objectives, find the career chart for the fields you have identified as being desirable. Entry-level positions within each field are those on the bottom of the career ladder. The entrance qualifications and typical job duties for these positions are described on the back of the career chart. Complete class descriptions and entrance qualifications for all classes can be obtained in our Index of Class Descriptions.

The second section provides listings of Educational Institutions and Training Programs available in the greater Los Angeles area. Lists of community colleges, public colleges and universities, and private colleges and universities are provided. Information is also presented regarding specific educational training programs including the Personnel Commission's "Organizational Excellence" staff development program for Classified Employees. Tuition Reimbursement Request forms follow.

Next, you will find Schematic Listings of job classifications within the Classified Service. This section is organized by occupational field or series (e.g., Clerical Series). Under each series there are a number of job groups, and within each group there are specific job classifications. The report also provides the class code and the bargaining unit to which each job classification belongs.

The guide ends with Classified Salary Information. This report lists the salary rates by class title for the Classified Service. Salary information is available for each job classification.

Employment With The District

Notification of New Exams

Monthly "Employment Opportunities" bulletins are sent to all schools and work locations announcing examinations scheduled for administration. This information can also be found here or by calling the Job Hotline at (213) 353-4200 ext. 4. This recording lists all jobs for which applicants are currently being recruited. It is updated every Monday. The job hotline is accessible 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Individual job bulletins are available at any of the employment offices. It is advisable to register in advance for examinations by calling (213) 353-4200 ext. 1. This eliminates the necessity of watching for future "Employment Opportunities" publications for a specific class because when recruitment for the specific examination in which you are interested begins, you will automatically be sent information regarding that position and an application for employment.

The Merit System

LAUSD operates under a system of merit which means that individuals are selected and promoted on the basis of merit and fitness as demonstrated in a competitive examination process. Inherent in the concept of merit is that all evaluations are job related and there is no discrimination because of race, color, national origin, ancestry, age, marital status, sex, sexual orientation, religious creed, political affiliation, medical condition, physical disability, or mental disability.

Changing Your Job

This guide can assist you in determining which jobs you should try to attain in order to reach your final goal. Once employed by the District, there are three ways to change your job:

Promotion - Promotion is attained through placement of a current regular employee from a lower level class into a class with a higher maximum salary rate by means of a competitive examination. At times, examinations are given on a "promotional only" basis in which only District employees who have completed 130 paid days in regular status may compete. If you do not have access to the monthly "Employment Opportunities" bulletin, you can find it on the LAUSD website under Employment.

Change of Location - This action involves the reassignment of an employee from one position to another in the same class at the same salary level.

Transfer of Class - This movement involves the reassignment of an employee from one class to a related yet different class. The related class to which an employee wishes to transfer must have requirements and job duties that are similar to those of his/her present job.
