WINDOW/WALL WASHER
DEFINITION
Cleans glass surfaces, such as windows, transoms, and skylights, doors, partitions, walls, ceilings, and kitchen appliances.
TYPICAL DUTIES
Applies and removes cleaning solutions to glass surfaces using tools such as brushes, chamois, squeegees, scrapers, and sponges.
Washes ceilings, walls, blinds, light fixtures, vent covers, and kitchen appliances.
Moves and adjusts rolling and suspended/electric scaffolding, ladders, and other equipment used in window and wall washing.
Removes and replaces screens, window blocks, grills and vent covers.
Reports broken window panes, unsafe equipment, unsafe window hooks, or loose window frames and screens to a Senior Window/Wall Washer.
Performs the duties of a Building and Grounds Worker on an intermittent, as needed basis.
Performs clean-up from fires, flood, vandalism, etc.
Performs related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS AMONG RELATED CLASSES
A Window/Wall Washer cleans windows and other glass surfaces, walls, ceilings, and kitchen appliances.
A Senior Window/Wall Washer supervises and participates in the work of a crew engaged in washing and cleaning windows, and other glass surfaces, walls, ceilings and kitchen appliances.
A Building and Grounds Worker maintains an assigned area of buildings and grounds in a clean, sanitary, and safe condition, including incidental cleaning of glass surfaces inside buildings. At elementary schools, custodial personnel perform limited exterior window washing.
SUPERVISION
Immediate supervision is received from a Senior Window/Wall Washer and/or a plant manager. No supervision is exercised.
CLASS QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
Techniques and equipment used in washing of glass surfaces, walls, ceilings, and kitchen appliances
Cleaning materials, such as soap, detergents, and disinfectants
Types and weights of glass
Safety regulations of the California Occupational Safety and Health Program (CAL/OSHA) and
the California Occupational Safety and Health Act
Sterilization and sanitation standards used in custodial work
General grounds maintenance practices, machinery, and equipment
Ability to:
Wash windows, walls, and other surfaces in conformance with established practices
Adjust and use window and wall washing equipment
Follow oral and written instructions
Set up extension ladders and rolling and suspended/ electric scaffolding
Test and use safety belts and harnesses
Identify appropriate safe means of securing and tying off suspended scaffolding equipment and appropriate wind conditions for use of suspended scaffolding
Special Physical Requirements:
Climb ladders
Work safely from a scaffold or extension ladder
Safely lift and carry up to 100 pounds
Safely move heavy supplies, machinery, and equipment
Stamina to stand and walk for long periods of time
Ability to bend, stoop, and squat
ENTRANCE QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency.
Experience:
One year of experience as a Building and Grounds Worker for the District.
Special:
A valid California Driver License.
Use of an automobile.
SPECIAL NOTE
Prior to employment, all successful candidates will be required to pass an asbestos medical examination in compliance with the General Industry Safety Orders, Section 5208, Title 8 of the California Code of Regulations.
Successful completion of the Maintenance and Operations Branch training on window washing is required prior to completion of the probationary period.
