PROGRAM MODEL EXPANSION

Program Expansion Model for New Participating Schools
($3,000-Elementary, $3,600-Middle/Senior High Schools)

I.    Orientation Workshop

The initial Proficiency in English Program (P.E.P.) orientation workshop to school clusters will be presented by the P.E.P. staff.  This exciting workshop challenges school personnel to use innovative P.E.P. teaching strategies guaranteed to assist teachers and other staff to learn of the importance and the how-to of teaching oral and written English to linguistically diverse students.  

II.    Training Design (P.E.P. trainer-of-trainers/cascading process)

The P.E.P. staff and coordinating lead training teachers (elementary/secondary) will train all local school personnel on the P.E.P.

Each elementary school will have coordinating lead training teachers, grade-level training teachers, and one parent representative. 

Each middle school and senior high school will have coordinating lead training teachers (from English departments), department training teachers, and one parent representative.  

  1. P.E.P. Language Institute Conference will be conducted by P.E.P. staff and resource consultants for all participating coordinating lead training teachers, grade-level department training teachers, and categorical program advisors and other interested participants.  
  2. In-service training for education aides and parent representatives will be held at the local school site.  
  3. P.E.P. professional development training will employ:  
  1. Techniques and strategies using second-language acquisition. 
  2. "Theme Teaching" throughout all subject areas where appropriate. 
  3. Critical thinking skills
  4. Career education ("The World of Work")
  5. Vocabulary expansion
  6. Instructional assemblies
  7. Instructional oratorical contest (school site and invitational)
  8. History and culture of culturally diverse groups
  9. Language experience approach to develop oral and written language
  10. Core literature/Ethnic literature
  11. Professional development through instructional demonstrations
  12. Supplemental Language Activities; Structure Practice/Integrated Oral Language
  13. Self-esteem/Self-perception/Affirmation and Character Building Skills
  14. Economic/Entrepreneurship
  15. Current events
  16. P.E.P. Talk (small talk and discussion/debates)
  1. Classroom techniques and strategies will be presented at P.E.P. demonstration schools for participating coordinating lead teachers, grade-level/department training teachers, education aides, and parent representatives by the P.E.P. staff and training teachers from the original demonstration schools. 
  2. School staff will receive ongoing oral language lessons and resource materials.
  3. Ongoing assessment and evaluation of the program will be conducted by the P.E.P. staff.
