Microsoft Unlimited Potential Grants

Funding Agency: Mircrosoft Coorporation
Purpose: Microsoft Coorporation makes "Unlimited Potential" grants to provide technology skills for disadvantaged individuals through community-based technology and learning centers (CTLCs).  Microsoft seeks to remove the limits to individual potential around the world by eliminating technology illiteracy.

Eligibility: CTLCs (in community centers, schools, libraries, housing facilities or other locations) offering:  public access on a walk-in, low- or no-fee basis; an informal, welcoming environment; strong leadership; friendly, knowledgeable staff or volunteers; a social benefit focus/mission; relevant curriculum driven by local demand; and well maintained, reliable computer equipment, peripherals and connectivity.  Tip:  Schools are not eligible for funding for programs during school hours, but may qualify for support through programs run by a nonprofit organization during non-school hours.

Total Funds Available: Announced on September 2003, the first round of grants totaled $8.1 million, $4.5 million of this in cash the rest in software.  Microsoft plans to commit more than $1 billion to the initiative over the next five years.
