Purpose: The National Aeronautics and Space Administration seeks schools from across the country to develop school-based programs using NASA content and expertise as a base for professional developmnet and authentic science, mathematics and technology (SMT) experiences for students in order to meet local goals for improving SMT education.
Eligibility: The 2004 NASA Explorer Schools program will focus on NASA content at the 4-9 grade levels. Educators and administrators in participating schools must be familiar with and have year-round access to the Internet on a regular basis. Optimally, students will also need Internet access during the school year on an as-needed basis. Priority is on schools with underserved students (determined by ethnicity, economic disadvantage, disabilities or geographic location).  A school-based team of 4-5 people will lead the effort and must participate in an all expenses paid, six day NASA summer residence workshop. All team members must be U.S. citizens. All workshops and communications are in English.

Average Award: Schools in the program are eligible to receive up to $17,500 (pending continued funding) over the three-year period to purchase technology tools that support science and mathematics instruction.  NASA Explorer School educator/administrator teams will attend a one-week, all expenses paid, professional development residence program at one of ten NASA Field Centers.  Teachers and administrators will receive a $500 stipend for full participation in the summer 2004 workshop and a $500 stipend for implementing the team's action plan during the 2004/2005 school year. Graduate credits or professional development credits are available.
Number of Years: The program will be maintained for three years pending continued funding.
