Fairfax Community Adult School is part of the Division of Adult and Career Education of the Los Angeles Unified School District. The main campus is located at the intersection of Fairfax and Melrose Avenue on the city's west side within a few blocks of the recently incorporated City of West Hollywood. The school boundaries are La Brea Avenue on the east, La Cienega Boulevard on the west, Sunset Boulevard and Fountain Avenue on the north and Olympic Boulevard on the south. The school serves the southern reaches of Hollywood, the Beverly-Fairfax District, the Miracle Mile, and the City of West Hollywood.
What is now Fairfax Community Adult School started in 1942 on the campus of Fairfax High School. Today, the high school and adult school share the facility. Twenty-one additional branch locations provide educational programs for adult students and concurrently enrolled youth in its service area.
The school's attendance are is uniquely cosmopolitan. In the past decade, Melrose Avenue has become a fashion mecca for shoppers from all over Southern California. These throngs of shoppers strolling the sidewalks also support a number of trendy restaurants in the area. During this same time span, the City of West Hollywood has become an incorporated city and adopted the motto, "The Creative City." The neighborhood surrounding the main campus has expanded from a primarily middle-aged Jewish community to a younger multi-ethnic mix of Jews, Hispanics, Anglos, and African-Americans to one welcoming a new wave of Jewish immigration from Russia and Israel. Although densely populated and coping with all the usual urban problems, the community exhibits a remarkable level of energy and resourcefulness in meeting those problems.
