INTRODUCTION

Welcome to Fairfax Community Adult School. The training, experience and knowledge you bring to us is a valuable contribution to our program. Adult education is a vital segment of the public school system. It is a special type of education with characteristics that call for special curricula, course contents, methods and materials, counseling services, and most importantly, a special teaching staff.

Adult education loses validity as an educational enterprise if it is not geared to adult needs. It should be noted that adult education loses potential as a community influence if it is not offered at times, in locations, and with methods suitable to adult students. In your role as an instructor, you can assist our total effort by:

• Encouraging students who have not earned high school diplomas to see our counselors.
• Asking students to recommend our program to friends and relatives.
• Emphasizing the willingness of the teacher and staff to help students achieve their educational goals.

Since teaching is the primary reason for you being here, we will do as much as possible to relieve you of distractions and time-consuming activities. This handbook has been prepared to familiarize and assist you with the policies and procedures necessary to make your teaching experience at Fairfax successful and rewarding.
