PROCEDURES FOR PROTECTING THE SAFETY OF STUDENTS DURING CLASS ACTIVITIES

A. Assume that students, even the most fluent ones, do not necessarily understand oral and written instructions.

  1. Ensure that directions are understood by paraphrasing, explaining, questioning students and demonstrating for them.
  2. Use universal sign, posters, bilingual texts, vocabulary lists, and audiovisual supplemental materials.
  3. Be specific; do not over generalize.

B. Provide the degree of supervision that is appropriate to the class activity in progress.

  1. Supervise personally those activities that require the greatest precaution regarding safety.
  2. Guarantee that a paraprofessional or peer tutor is capable of leading an activitiy before allowing him or her to undertake that leadership.

C. Be consistent in the enforcement of safety rules and regulations.

  1. Enforce rules and procedures consistently to forster habitual safe behavior in students.
  2. Create a room environment that reflects standards of safety.
    Be a model of safe behavior for students.
  3. Insist that students use only District-approved equipment, tools and safety devices.
  4. Provide regular safety checks of tools and equipment.
  5. Remove/correct all safety hazards in student work areas.
