PROCEDURES FOR PROTECTING THE SAFETY OF
STUDENTS DURING CLASS ACTIVITIES

A. Assume that students, even the most fluent ones, do not
necessarily understand oral and written instructions.
- Ensure that directions are understood by paraphrasing,
explaining, questioning students and demonstrating for them.
- Use universal sign, posters, bilingual texts, vocabulary
lists, and audiovisual supplemental materials.
- Be specific; do not over generalize.
B. Provide the degree of supervision that is appropriate to the
class activity in progress.
- Supervise personally those activities that require the
greatest precaution regarding safety.
- Guarantee that a paraprofessional or peer tutor is capable of
leading an activitiy before allowing him or her to undertake that
leadership.
C. Be consistent in the enforcement of safety rules and
regulations.
- Enforce rules and procedures consistently to forster habitual
safe behavior in students.
- Create a room environment that reflects standards of
safety.
Be a model of safe behavior for students.
- Insist that students use only District-approved equipment,
tools and safety devices.
- Provide regular safety checks of tools and equipment.
- Remove/correct all safety hazards in student work areas.
