ABSENCES (Return to General Information List)

It is the teacher's responsibility to notify the Fairfax Adult School Office as far in advance as possible of any expected absences. Since the office does not open until 8 a.m. Monday through Friday, teachers with early morning assignments should call Vera Jarrett, the Administrative Assistant at (626) 331-4172 before 6:30 a.m.

When calling to report an expected absence, be prepared to state:

Upon your return to duty, you will complete one of the following Absentee Payment Cards:

A signed Payroll Absentee Card must be on file for the principal to authorize payment. Unpaid absences do not require a signed certificated card.

ABSENTEES (Return to General Information List)

Students who are absent for a brief time may be embarrassed to return. Those who do not return to class after two consecutive meetings should be contacted personally by telephone or mail. See the office staff for post cards or to use a phone.

ACCIDENTS (Return to General Information List)

It is essential that all accidents be reported to the Main Office immediately. The school is responsible for reporting even the slightest accident. The following information is necessary: name, age, address or ionjured party, description of accident and injury, medical treatment, and names of any witnesses. Accident report forms may be obtained from the Administrative Assistant. In case of a serious accident or illness, call the Paramedics at 911, and notify the Principal, an assistant principal, or Administrative Assistant immediately. DO NOT call private hospitals or doctors. It is not advisable for teachers to transport sick or injured students. The District does not provide liability insurance for you or your vehicle.

The employee also must contact a physician who is on the District's Emergency Medical Plan or a private physical (prior notification on file required) for an examination and treatment of any injury or illness which has occurred. A completed Employee Report of Incident or Injury on the Job (Form 1884) must be submitted to the school Administrative Assistant within two working days after the occurrence. Teachers on an hourly rate are required to teach for the entire number of hours assigned. Adult schools DO NOT operate on a 50-minute class hour. Board of Education regulations require that teachers be in classrooms ten minutes prior to the beginning of an assignment. Class rooms must be supervised by a credentialed teacher at all times. NEVER leave the class room or students unsupervised. Article IX, Section 3.3 of the Collective Bargaining Agreement states that teachers "shall be at their assigned duty station at least 20 minutes before the first daily class begins." Needless to say, being in your classroom early and greeting your students as they arrive, promotes punctuality. Since our funding is dependent on student attendance, it is important the we encourage our students--by our good example--to attend early and often.

If, for any reason, you feel that a mistake has been made, contact the office immediately. Only the payroll person in the office can rectify the matter. Unfortunately, the correction may take time and there is no way for the local office to hurry payroll procedures. If a teacher has more than one assignment with the School District and has received in incorrect check for a given payperiod, the problem cannot be handled on an emergency basis. Over-payment should be reported as the error will eventually be found, and the money will re reclaimed.

SHARING A CLASSROOM (Return to General Information List)

Try to avoid conflicts before they arise. When you are first assigned to a classroom, introduce yourself in person to your day counterpart if possible, or leave a friendly note introducing yourself. As long as you maintain a cooperative relatiolnship, you will be less likely to encounter conflicts. You are entitled--to a certain extent--to make use of bulletin boards, cabinets, etc. However, negotiate this use with your day counterpart. If a conflict does arise, don't fight it out on your own.
