This competency-based course is designed to develop the mastery of the simple sentence. Additional topics include development of a dynamic writing style. the use of reading selections as models of effective writing, and the production of informal written communication (friendly letters, geographic directions, messages, personal data sheet, and journals).

This competency-based course is designed to develop skills in writing expanded sentences such as compound complex, and compound complex; and in developing single paragraphs utilizing the concepts of utility and logical sequence of ideas. Additional focus will include the writing of effective business letters.

 

23-01-53

This competency-based course emphasizes the mastery of the paragraph with an introduction to the four elements of discourse (expository, narrative, descriptive, and persuasive) and the development of longer compositions of three to five paragraphs. This course includes paraphrasing, summarizing, and an introduction to literary analysis.

This course-based course is the first half of a comprehensive survey of the United States history. Instruction includes an overview of pre-Columbian history and cultures, a review of the colonial and the development of dramatic institutions, the American war for Independence from 1800-1850, the causes and consequences of the Civil War, the election of 1876 and the end of Reconstruction, the rise of industrial America to 1914, and American Involvement in World War 1. The course includes a consideration of California history and seeks to develop the skills of written expression, interpretation of graphic materials, and critical thinking.

Instruction includes events in United States history in the 20th century, with an examination of the constitutional basis for our democratic political tradition, the major themes of the inter war period and the Great Depression, the causes and consequences of World War II, the cold war. and the Civil Rights Movement, American society and hemispheric relations in the post war era, and major events of recent times.
