Buckwheat, a small shrub two to three feet high, grows in
the coastal sage and chaparral. Its pollen is cherished
by bees, and the honey produced from this shrub is
considered to be among the best. It blooms from April to
October and is one of the most characteristic plants of
the Southern California chaparral. Buckwheat was often
used by some Native Americans to make a flat bread.
