A Brief History

The Clear Creek weekend program has been in operation for more than 20 years and has experienced significant change over time.  Initially, the site was utilized more as a retreat for secondary students who with their teachers focused on subjects such as band, chess, foreign langage, etc.  As interest grew, it was determined that the facility would best be used by operating in a manner similar to the weekday elementary science program.  A director and counseling staff were hired to lead students through a series of organized activities that incorporate natural history, natural science and conservation.  Visiting teachers still have time to include lessons, discussions, or activities of their own preference, but the majority of scheduled activities center around instructional hikes and other interactions with the surrounding environment.  Center staff continually strive to provide the highest quality program possible.

What You Get

Your students will be introduced to the local chaparral and riparian habitats.  They will venture out into the dark on an organized night hike where they will discuss nocturnal animal adaptations, learn about objects in the night sky, and engage in sensory activities.  They will study geology and have an opportunity to look for semi-precious gemstones to take home as momentos of the Clear Creek visit.  Other scheduled activities include icebreakers, team building & initiative games, campfire, archery, arts & crafts, and swimming (swimming is offered June 1st through September 30th only).  Between activities and meals, students can relax with friends, play ball, ping pong, or visit with resident animals (see the schedule for a typical weekend).

The Clear Creek staff conducts all activities.  Teachers are asked to participate and assist with supervision.  Teachers are also responsible for student discipline as necessary.  Teachers, students, and staff sleep in cabins (cabins are assigned by gender).  Two credentialed teachers are required for each trip of 45 students or less, an additional school employee is required for larger groups of sixty students.

Costs Are Minimal
Costs to students are minimal.  Students in the free lunch program pay nothing for meals.  Reduced lunch students pay $1.60, and full price students pay $8.00.  These prices include Friday dinner, three meals and a snack on Saturday, and two meals on Sunday.  Students are also asked to pay $0.90 (90 cents) each for insurance.  Schools must provide transportation.

Who May Participate
Clear Creek weekends are available on a first come, first served basis for both newly participating schools and returning schools in good standing.  Although high schools may sign up, please note that curriculum and activities are directed toward middle school students.  Only LAUSD schools, students, and employees may participate.
