FAQs: Making WWW Pages on
LAUSDnet
My question is not here, so I want to email the webmaster.
What is the difference
between the WWW and the LAUSDnet menu system?
The menu system provides a collection of Internet programs and
some utilities. There are no graphics. The menu system is text
based. The World Wide Web can be graphical when accessed with web
browsers like Netscape or Explorer. The menu system can be access
through a variety of terminal emulation programs that come with
your modem (Procomm, PC Plus, Zterm, Committ., etc). You can also
access the menu system while using the graphic system (PPP
connection) using EWAN, NCSA Telnet, or other telnet programs.
Who should I contact for
help?
To find a detailed description of who to contact for help, you
may use the "Help" button located at the bottom of
almost every LAUSDnet page.
I want to view my web
pages and I get a forbidden message. What should I do?
You will need to change the permissions of the files in your web
directory on www.lausd.k12.ca.us. If you did this and you still
have the same problem, you will need to contact the Webmaster.
How do I change the
permissions of my .html, .htm, .gif, for .jpg files in my web
directory?
Change these permissions using the Utilities (Menu Item #7) option in the LAUSDnet menu. Then select Menu Item #5. You can also change permissions using most ftp programs. If you use an ftp program to change your permissions, you should set your permissions for the following:
Files
user: read, write
group: read
others: read
Directories/Folders
user: read, write, execute
group: read, execute
other: read, execute
How do I change
permissions on scripts?
You can change the permissions to make these files executable.
However, please email the Webmaster to review your script. Whenever possible, try to develop, compile and test your script on your PC. To execute a script from your web browser, you must use a .cgi file extension (myscript.cgi).
How do I upload or place
my web pages on LAUSDnet?
The easiest way to upload or place your web pages on LAUSDnet is to use an ftp program like WS_FTP (Win) or Fetch (Macintosh). These programs came with your installation disks and can also be downloaded from many software archive sites. We have posted general
instructions, guidelines, and some website tutorials to help you.
What is LAUSDnet's menu
access?
When ITD build an internet system, their first priority was to
make it accessible to as many teachers and students as possible.
Knowing that many teachers and students did not have access to
computers that could handle the graphics on the web, ITD first
introduced a text-based access to the internet. This is still
available to all users. If you are accessing LAUSDnet through the
graphical (PPP) connection, you can access the menu system by
telneting to LAUSDnet. NCSA Telnet (Mac) and EWAN (PC) are just
two of the many telnet programs you can use. To use them, log
into LAUSDnet as you normally do. However, instead of or in
addition to opening Netscape, open your telnet program.
