Motions And Resolutions (Draft Language)

EE.Mr. Kiriyama and Ms. Korenstein - Support of Federal Senate Bill 882 (SB 882)(Boxer), After
School Education and Safety Act of 1997
- Whereas, On June, 11, 1997, United States Senator Barbara Boxer introduced Senate Bill 882, the
"After School Education and Safety Act of 1997";
- Whereas, SB 882 would create after-school enrichment programs for kindergarten, elementary,
and secondary school-age students;
- Whereas, The goals of the Bill are to increase the academic success of students; improve the
intellectual, social, physical, and cultural skills of students; promote safe and healthy environments
for students; and prepare students for workforce participation;
- Whereas, A total of $50 million would be authorized for activities stipulated in the Bill, which
could fund an estimated 300-500 programs nationwide;
- Whereas, Applications would be made to the United States Secretary of Education;
- Whereas, Schools receiving grants must provide at least two of the following:
- Mentoring programs
- Academic assistance
- Recreational activities
- Technology training;
- Whereas, Schools receiving grants may offer additional activities, including:
- Drug, alcohol, and gang prevention
- Health and nutrition counseling
- Job skills preparation;
- Whereas, All activities authorized by the Bill would have to take place in a school building or other
public facility designated by the school; and
- Whereas, Such programs are of critical importance in this District's efforts to improve the academic
achievement of our students and enhance the skills essential to full, productive participation in our
society; now, therefore, be it
- Resolved, That the Board of Education of the City of Los Angeles strongly support S.B. 882 as
introduced by California's United States Senator Barbara Boxer; and be it
- Resolved further, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to all the members of this District's
congressional delegation.
