ANNUAL MEETING MINUTES
10:00 a.m., July 1, 2004

The Board of Education of the City of Los Angeles, acting as the Governing Board of the Los Angeles Unified School District, met in annual session on July 1, 2004, in the Board Room, at Administrative Offices, 333 South Beaudry Avenue, Los Angeles

Superintendent Roy Romer called the meeting to order at 10:18 a.m.

Ms. Canter led the Pledge of Allegiance.

The following Board Members present were: Ms. Marguerite Poindexter LaMotte, Mr. José Huizar, Mr. Jon Lauritzen, Ms. Marlene Canter, Mr. David Tokofsky, Ms. Julie Korenstein,
and Mr. Mike Lansing.

Ms. LaMotte introduced students from the Los Angeles Youth Arts Academy who performed an excerpt from the original play production entitled "Ephraim's Song." Approximately 50 high school students from Board District 1 will perform this play at Hamilton High School over the next two weeks under the direction of Mark Swinton and Timi McGill.

Board Members thanked the students for their commitment and dedication.

ELECTION OF NEW PRESIDENT

Superintendent Romer stated:

In accordance with Board Rule 1, nominations are in order to elect a President of the Board of Education for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2004.

Mr. Lansing placed in nomination the name of Mr. José Huizar. Ms. Korenstein seconded the nomination.

Ms. LaMotte moved to close the nomination. Mr. Tokofsky seconded the motion, which by general consent was adopted.

On roll call and by unanimous vote, 7 ayes, the motion nominating Mr. Huizar as Board President for the 2004-05 school year was adopted.

Mr. Huizar thanked the Board Members for their vote of confidence, stated his belief that the District will be in the top 10 percent of urban school districts, and invited everyone to continue to focus on closing the achievement gap, the success of the construction program, and on greater parental involvement.

He recognized his wife, Ms. Rochelle Rios, and thanked her for her support .

ELECTION OF BOARD MEMBER REPRESENTATIVE TO THE LOS ANGELES
COUNTY SCHOOL TRUSTEES ASSOCIATION

ELECTION OF BOARD MEMBER AS PRESIDENT OF THE LAUSD FINANCING CORPORATION

These items were postponed to the Regular Board Meeting on July 13, 2004.

ADOPTION OF BOARD MEETINGS SCHEDULE

Mr. Lauritzen moved the adoption of tthe Board Meetings Schedule for the 2004-05 School Year. Ms. LaMotte seconded the motion, which by general consent was adopted.

On motion by Mr. Tokofsky, seconded by Ms. Canter, and by general consent the meeting adjourned at 10:42 p.m.
