  •      The Vernon St. Elementary School was constructed in 1896.  The Vernon District was annexed by Los Angeles in 1928.  Passage of a bond issue resulted in the building of a new school on the site.  -from Treasures of L.A.U.S.D., "The Los Angeles Schools from the Past and the Present"
  • Although 55,000 people work in Vernon, the population of Vernon is the state's least populated city, a community with only 85 full-time residents.
  • Vernon is a 5-square-mile industrial city.
  • Vernon City was named for George R. Vernon, a Civil War hero and one of the area's earliest settlers.
  • In front of the Vernon City Hall are three inconspicuous rocks that commemorate a 153 year old event that changed California's history:  the Battle of Los Angeles.  This was the last encounter fought in Los Angeles during the Mexican-American War.
