Vernon St. Elementary School was constructed in 1896. The Vernon
District was annexed by Los Angeles in 1928. Passage of a bond issue

a community with only 85 full-time residents.

George R. Vernon, a Civil War hero and one of the area's earliest settlers.

In front of the Vernon City
Hall are three inconspicuous rocks that commemorate a 153 year old event
that changed California's history: the Battle of Los Angeles.
This was the last encounter fought in Los Angeles during the Mexican-American
War.
