Lisa Karahalios called the meeting to order. Everyone
introduced themselves including the Student Body President,
David Johnson. Present were Dellepiane, Karahalios, Johnson,
R. Akman, J. Plevack, J. Hoelscher, G. Speer, S. Parker,
M. Wells, H. Ornelas, J. Mendelsohn, T. White, and W.
Reinhart.
Cheryl Dellepiane made an Administration Report. Among
the major items are that:
1) We have met our maximum enrollment of close to 2,400
regular and Magnet students. We have 107 Certificated
staff members including two JROTC instructors.
2) The Plant work is being completed. The sprinklers are
in, but now the landscaping will need a lot of work. She
read a letter from Julie Korenstein saying “please
let her know if the work isn’t completed by the
end of October.” Sonya Parker has heard that Home
Depot or Lowe’s might come and do major landscape
planting. Cheryl noted that Mr. Laue, now at Mt. Lukens,
has contacts with L.A. City and the Tree People about
a grant for landscaping.
3) The flooring work will begin in the near future. New
tiles and asbestos abatement will be part of the process.
Mr. Plevack fought to get the double bungalow placed on
campus as a place for the two classes (at a time) that
are displaced during the process to go. In our computer
classrooms there will be a sealing process utilizing carpet
tiles rather than a removal process.
4) Mrs. Dellepiane talked about the Professional Development
for this year. 63% of our staff believes they will be
more effective in Small School Learning Communities.
The Council went over the Calendar. October 7th will be
“Back to School Night” with the Site Council
Parent members elected that evening. Dr. Wells said the
Senior Assembly will be Wednesday, October 6th, with Period
2 for the A - L students and Per. 3 for the M - Z students
in the Cafeteria.
Lisa Karahalios made the Faculty Report. She said they
hadn’t had one of the area representatives meetings.
The union is still in negotiations over the teachers’
contract. They are “making it more difficult for
teacher salary points to be accepted.” The School
Board is talking about a class size of a 20 to 1 ration
in 9th grade classes for Small Learning Communities. We
discussed a variety of classroom models, schedule changes,
and half-time teacher options.
We discussed the concept of the Early Start Calendar;
pros and cons. The Superintendent and the Teachers’
Union support the idea.
We adjourned at 4:25p.m. The next meeting will be October
26th at 3:30p.m. in Room 157.
