Norm day came and went uneventfully. No layoffs. Student
enrollment at all time high of 2319. Although the classes
are large, they are within the district average of 40.5
(What does the .5 kid look like?)
We are settling in to a successful professional development
program. On alternate Tuesdays we are meeting either in
collaborative groups or full faculty meetings that focus
on student achievement. We have received the first installment
of our $422,000 in the amount of $105,000 from our CSRD
Grant of $422,000 a year for three years.
Superintendent Romer and District B superintendent Burton
are focusing on improving the High School Exit Exam pass
rate. They are trying to funnel more money into the secondary
level.
The District's exit exam, the Sharp Write and Topics is
being phased out. This Senior class is the last required
to take it.
Athletes and coaches were commended for their hard work
in representing Verdugo's skill and sportsmanship. The
Faculty volleyball team that included three new players,
Jan Hackett, Nancy Reis and Cheryl Minke, defeated the
girls' team.
Leadership is asking for teacher support in supervising
the Pep Rally on Nov. 8th. Please stay in your designated
areas so that any potential problems will be nipped in
the bud. Also, the Pep Rally schedule is being revised
to limit loss of classroom instructional time. A schedule
and instructions for bringing students to the field will
be put in your box.
The literacy and math coaches will be glad to hear that
the union has decided to look into the efficacy of the
program before offhandedly declaring that they are against
it. Cheryl feels that the district's heart is in the right
place and sincerely want the schools to be able to finetune
the program to fit their needs.
More $ bites the dust. The 1882 program has not been
refunded. The state has nixed it. Title I funds will now
have to be tapped to cover the loss. On a positive note¯
John Ralles, Jean Hoelscher and Charlie Noyes have worked
hard to have Title I designated as a schoolwide program.
The school home videos have been distributed through
the Language Arts and Math departments. Response has been
positive.
A committee has been set up to establish copy machine
guidelines and improve staff access to them. If you would
like to help or have a suggestion please see Will Reinhart,
Karen Glow or Martina Martin.
Also, a committee has been established to look into finding
a way to get professional support for our technology that
doesn't do any good if it doesn't work. Sometimes it feels
like the Amish who hook horses up to mechanical tractors.
The administration is "painfully aware" of the
problem and has established it as a priority. If you have
suggestions or would like to join the committee see, Will
Reinhart, Karen Glow or John Ralles.
As usual, there was no entertainment and no refreshments,
but lots of sincere attempts to improve our school.
The next meeting is November 5, 2002
