Verdugo Goes Copernican

Tuesday, September 8, 1998 — In an effort to improve student learning and performance, Verdugo Hills High School has adopted a new Copernican block scheduling program beginning with the new 1998-99 academic year.

The block schedule divides the school year into four 10-week terms. Classes length is increased to 90 minutes from the traditional 55 minutes and students take an average of three classes per term. Traditional semester classes are taught over the course of one term, while normally annual classes will be taught over two consecutive terms.

Students will still average 12 courses per year. But, by increasing class length and dividing the number of classes students take at any one time in half, it is hoped that their learning experience will be more immersive and concentrated.

Stay tuned for results.
