Period 4 for all 9th grade students.
Starting Monday, February 3, 2003
Dear 9th Grade Students and Parents/Guardians:
I am pleased to announce that, in spite of the recent
state budget cuts, Verdugo Hills High School has been granted
additional resources by the District and State to provide
extra support for underperforming students and for those
who would benefit from enrichment activities. A major portion
of our funding will be invested in our 9th grade program
because our 9th grade class is traditionally the most at-risk
and the most in need of additional academic support. Therefore,
beginning Term C (February 3, 2003), all 9th graders, with
the exception of those involved in extra-curricular activities,
will be assigned a special 4th period class to run from
approximately 1:20 to 2:10 p.m. There will be no tests (for
grading Purposes) and no homework. Students will receive
5 semester credits for Terms C and D and will be graded
on a “Pass-Fail” basis. The goals and objectives
for this program are:
• To provide focused, academic intervention for
9th graders who are struggling to access grade-level standards
and curriculum.
• To address critical student needs in relation
to standardized testing and the California High School Exit
Exam
• To provide academic enrichment to close the
achievement gap.
• To provide same-day tutorial support and to
assist with homework.
• To maximize the use of the Copernican Block
Schedule and to respond to parental preference for a longer
day for our younger students.
Our counselors are currently reviewing each student’s
records to determine appropriate placement. Depending on
need, students will take courses that focus on skill building
or enrichment activities in the curricular areas of math,
language arts, and science. There will also be an emphasis
on study skills and strategies leading to college entrance.
Students and parents will be notified of individual placement
by counselors during the final weeks of Term B. We anticipate
that this program will promote success for all!
Sincerely,
Cheryl Dellepiane, Principal
