School Supply Shopping List
What should my child have on the first day of school? How can I help my child be successful?
General Supplies:
>Your child’s teacher will provide a list of recommended school supplies, however, every child will need a backpack to carry homework, books, notes, etc. If you have a child in grades 3-6, you may want to consider a backpack with wheels, as the books can be heavy.
>If your child will be bringing his/her lunch from home, decide if your child will have a lunch box or use lunch bags.
>#2 pencils (always needed)
>Your child will receive a Rosewood student planner and a folder.
>Consider a binder with dividers or color coded folders for each subject, to help your child stay organized.
>It is always beneficial to cover your child’s textbooks and workbooks. Brown grocery bags, as well as heavy wrapping paper work well, or you may want to purchase cloth covers at a local office/school supply store.
Supplies at Home:
>Set-up a quiet, well lit area at home where your child can do his/her schoolwork/homework/projects.
Ensure that your child has glue, scissors, pencils, erasers, a pencil sharpener, crayons, colored pencils, notebook paper, stapler, a ruler, and a container in which to keep these supplies. A shoe box works well.
Additional Parent Responsibilities:
>Check your child’s backpack daily and read and send back anything requiring your signature promptly.
>Check your child’s homework.
>Let your child know that homework is his/her responsibility.
>If your child is having problems getting his/her homework done, talk to his/her teacher or to Mrs. Crowder.
>If your child is having problems focusing on homework, see your child’s teacher, Mrs. Crowder, or Ms. Greenberg, the Assistant Principal.

Dear Rosewood Families and Friends:
I would like to welcome you to our website and to Rosewood. Rosewood is the kind of school where both students and staff members love to be! We have a dynamic staff and a wonderful family environment. We set high standards for ourselves and for our students. It is our goal and our wish that you, as families, spend as much time at Rosewood as possible. Make yourselves at home with your students and work together, with us, to provide your child the optimal opportunity for success. To ensure that all of our HUSKIES have a successful school year, I would like to make some suggestions to help you and your family find that success at Rosewood:
1. *Get to know your child’s teacher(s). Volunteer and help in the classroom or find out how you can help in other ways.
2. *Have the right attitude. Share your own positive thoughts and memories about school.
3. *Support student routines. A successful school experience requires sleep and consistent quality nutrition.
4. *Connect with the school. Read our newsletter and flyers, visit school when you can, and join the Friends of Rosewood (FoR).
5. *Ask about homework. Support your child by providing a quiet place, a consistent time, and help if needed. Let the teacher know if homework is taking more than an hour on a regular basis.
6. *Talk about school. Ask about friends, plans, activities, homework, teachers, events, etc.
7. *Come to school every day and arrive on time. Children attending school daily and arriving on time, do better academically and socially. Additionally, when you get children to school on time and bring them every day, you model the importance of getting an outstanding education and being responsible.
We want all of our students to have a great school year. Please contact me if you have questions, concerns, or ideas for our school.
Sincerely,
Linda Kaye- Crowder

What Makes Rosewood Special?
Rosewood Avenue is one of 38 schools throughout the LAUSD selected as a pilot school for the implementation of a Transition Kindergarten (TK) program. The TK program is specifically designed for children who turn five years of age between September 1 and December 2 of the enrollment year. All students must turn 5 by December 2nd to enter Kindgergarten. The TK program offers the "gift of time" to those students that are a bit younger; those needing more time with socialization and exploration. The TK program is not a special education program. The Rosewood community is pleased and proud to be able to offer this groundbreaking program as a means to foster student success. Please contact Mrs. Crowder if you have any questions.
Project Based Learning
Rosewood will implement Project Based Learning during the upcoming school year. In Project Based Learning, students are pulled through the curriculum by a meaningful question to explore, an engaging real-world problem to solve, or a challenge to design or create something.
The Arts at Rosewood
Rosewood is pleased to be the only school in the area to be able to provide visual arts, dance, and theater. As well as the instrumental music program, our vocal program, and our new after school orchestra program that will be open for students in grades 1-6. *see links for more information on orchestra program
Gifted and Talented Education (GATE)
Rosewood is uses the “clustering” model to meet the needs of gifted students. Rosewood is an SAS therefore, teachers have taken and continue to take on-going course work giving them strategies necessary to meet the unique needs of the gifted child. Teachers of gifted/talented students "differentiate" the core curriculum through various means, including flexible groupings, acceleration of content, independent study, tiered assignments, interest centers, learning centers, compacting in student's area of strength, adjusting questions, and use of above-grade-level resources. A full day clustering model is composed of identified gifted students, students who are being screened for recommendation to the GATE program, and students who are recommended for continued screening.
Accelerated Reading
Rosewood will also be integrating Accelerated Reader (AR) into the curriculum. AR is a daily progress monitoring software assessment used for monitoring the practice of reading. Accelerated Reader is an assessment that primarily determines whether or not a child has read a book. The software provides additional information to students regarding reading rates, amount of reading, and other variables related to reading.
