Roscoe Elementary is a multi-track pre-K through 5th grade school that is part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, local District B. The school is located in the city of Sun Valley, in the northeast end of the greater San Fernando Valley. Roscoe Elementary provides services for a student population of approximately 1200. That population consist of 95.9% Hispanic, 2.2% White, and less than 1% of all other ethnicities. The school operates a schoolwide Title I program as 99% of the students qualify for free/reduced lunch program. Currently, 77% of Roscoe students are English Language Learners, of which 75% speak Spanish as a primary language. All identified English Learners are assessed by State and local measurements, and placed according to ELD level in Structured English Immersion programs. All students are monitored for adequate yearly progress. Roscoe has 94 students identified for Special Ed services. Of those identified 14 receive instruction in a Special Day Class (SDC) setting with a fully credentialed Special Education teacher and a full time paraprofessional assistant. In addition, 37 students participate in the general ed program, and are pulled out for an average of 11/2 hours a day for specialized instruction in reading or math with the Resource Specialist who also has a full time paraprofessional assistant. The remainder of the students identified also participate in the regular ed program and receive specified services (ie. Language and Speech) via a pullout program.
