School Heritage

Upon completion of the Franciscan style buildings in 1925, the site was named Eugene Street School. Classes for educable mentally retarded pupils from 8-14 years of age were conducted. In 1956 the school was closed and left vacant except for a brief period when it was used as an annex of nearby Stevenson Junior High School. It was reopened as a regular elementary school and renamed McDonnell Avenue School with a modified office staff under the administration of the principal of Brooklyn Avenue School.

In July 1966 the school was transferred to the Special Education Branch. Bungalows were added and the school was remodeled to accommodate the needs of 9-18 year old mentally retarded pupils.

In February 1970, 14-18 year old TMR students were transferred to Ninth St. (now Lanterman) School and McDonnell Avenue School first admitted 6 and 7 year old TMR students.

In September 1971 the new building designed for physically handicapped pupils of East and North Los Angeles was completed. Classes for the physically handicapped were transferred from Pacific Blvd. and Salvin Schools. Classes for developmentally handicapped, autistic and multi-handicapped students were also added. The first non-categorical class was started in 1980. The new facility also included housing for physical and occupational therapy units staffed by the Department of Los Angeles County Crippled Children's Services.

In September 1981 the Los Angeles Board of Education honored the outstanding District educator, Alfonso B. Perez by renaming the school "Alfonso B. Perez Special Education Center."

A $5.2 million secondary building was opened in February 1982. One hundred students were transferred from Lanterman School to Perez. In 1998 the school was again renamed to "Alfonso B. Perez School".
