Overview

The Alfonso B. Perez School program consists of six instructional programs for identified handicapped elementary and secondary students requiring special school services. Elementary classes serve children from 3 to 12.9 years of age; secondary classes serve students from 12.10 to 22 years of age.

 

Mentally Retarded
(MR)

This program emphasizes instruction in basic academic and self-help skills, language growth, and motor development with a norm of 12 children per class.

Multiple Disabilities
(MD)

This program provides training for pupils who have two or more handicapping conditions; the classes of six to eight students allow for major assessment and individualized instruction.

Autistic
(AUT)

In the autistic classroom the program concentrates on the elimination of self-stimulatory behavior while teaching self-help skills, academics and language with a norm of 6 students.

Developmentally
Impaired (DI)

The DI students' needs are met in an environment especially designed to provide for a wide-range of severe physical disabilities and allows for intense instruction of self-help skills.

Preschool Intensive
(PSI)

This program meets the educational needs of pre-school children who are being assessed and prepared for appropriate placement upon reaching kindergarten age.

Community Based Instruction (CBI)

CBI is a program designed to teach students functional life skills. These skills are necessary to become contributing members of society. The students go into the surrounding community and practice such tasks as shopping, mailing letters, obtaining money orders, etc. Emphasis is also placed on obtaining employment for the students.

Additional Services

Psychological Services

Periodic evaluation and assessment, case studies and contracts with community agencies, counseling with pupils, parents, and staff are provided through the services of school psychologists.

Health Services

Three full-time nurses provide nursing and health services whereby they assist student who become ill at school, maintain health records and confer with parents as needed.
Doctor and audiological services are also provided.

Adaptive Physical Education

Special instruction is given to handicapped students who require developmental
or corrective physical education.

Speech and Language

The speech and language specialists assist students in improving total communication skills
as well as assessing needs.
