Last season was a difficult one for Puma baseball as the team lost many close games and finished with only 3 wins. Coach Malcolm Thomas leaves a successful softball program that won 44 games over the last 3 years to try turning the boys in the same winning direction. There are new asistant coaches and a new work ethic that should energize and challenge the boys to reach new heights. Practice is only a few weeks away and the boys have spent the last 2 months running, lifting weights, and stretching. Good luck to the boys and their new attitude!

Freshman Melissa Garcia continues to exceed expectations scoring 15 points in the Lady puma's win over Vaughn on the 20th of January 2010. Senior Angela Gonzalez had 11 rebounds and steadied the offense while playing suffocating, intelligent defense. Newcomer Ely Rivas had 4 steals and forced 6 jump balls as she is never afraid to dive for a loose ball! The Pumas now play East Valley on January 21st and Discovery Prep on the 22nd, with a chance to move into 2nd place in the league. Good luck and keep playing defense well.

Boys Varsity Coach - Jose Villafana - manuelvillafana@hotmail.com - Coach Villafana has being playing soccer for 8 years, and has been coaching for three years now. He played for NAHS for his senior year on the 06-07 team under the coaching of Mrs. Simmers . His first two years coaching were also at NAHS for the JV team the first year they only lost one game and the second year they were undefeted.

In 2009 the Lady Pumas softball team had their best season to date going 17-7 and reaching the Division 5 City semi-final before losing 1-0 to LACES. Coach Malcolm Thomas's troops won their 1st league championship in softball in only the 4th year of the program after 2 previous second place finishes. Junior Ashley Monroe was chosen as Valley league player of the year and finished as one of the nation's best hitters in avg and RBI. Freshman Katie Vogler was chosen as pitcher of the year for the league after winning a school record 16 games and setting school records in innings pitched, shutouts, and strikeouts. She had 2 perfect gms as well. Both were chosen as All-City 1st teamers and freshman Ely Rivas was chosen on the 2nd team. Along with some excellent new faces and a few more returners the Lady Pumas (now led by coach Shelby Anderson who did an incredible job with our 1st JV team ever) are a favorite to repeat as league champs and compete for the Div 5 City championship. Congratulations on a great year and good luck in 2010!!!

Volleyball
Under Head Coach Azy Badiei the boys volleyball program at NAHS has built a winning tradition. After securing City Championships in 2007 and 2008, the boys varsity volleyball team was once again league champion in 2009, advancing to the city semi-finals. It was a rebuilding year for NAHS, and will pay off in 2010 with a varsity squad full of experienced players. The boys junior varsity under Coach Tom Shedd was undefeated league champion in 2009 and the 2010 team looks to be filled with good athletes eager to learn the skills necessary to continue the great NAHS boys volleyball tradition. Off the court in 2009, the NAHS Volleyball Club participated in the American Cancer Society CSUN "Relay for Life" in 2009, raising $1300 for ACS and $1300 for NAHS - $500 to the Student Body Fund and $800 to the Volleyball Club.

Boys Junior Varsity Coach - Tom Shedd - tomas.shedd@lausd.net - Tom Shedd coaches boys junior varsity volleyball for NAHS. He previously coached boys volleyball for three years at Los Angeles Baptist High School, and has coached both boys and girls volleyball at NAHS for 3 years. "Coach Tom" is the pastor of Wings of Faith in Reseda, and is also a professional musician and music teacher. He and his wife Mary Lou have been married for 27 years and have four children, the youngest is daughter, Anna, who is now a senior at NAHS and heavily involved in drama.
