WEB 101 - Using Netscape Composer

You will be creating a California Mission Home Page.

You will be writing about your classroom's California Mission Project and you will learn to make links from your home page to your student's work.

What will we be doing today?

1. Create and save a page

2. Insert, align and resize an Image

3. Write, resize and align Text

4. Use Spell Check

5. Create a Link

6. Create a Background

7. Publish your Page

 

Let's begin!

1. Creating your first page

Find Netscape Communicator

Open Netscape Communicator

Open blank page in composer

 

2. Save the document

Go to the File on the menu bar

Click and hold slide down to save

On the save window click on the desktop button

Create new folder by click on new folder button

Name folder with your name and suffix .web

Give this page a name

Save this page in your folder

 

3. Create a title

The title should be about the California Mission Project and your class

Center the text using align button on the took bar

Choose font

Use Netscape tool bar click hold and move down to font

Set font to 36 point

Use Netscape tool bar click hold and move down or use tool bar on

composer by clicking and choosing number

You may set the color and styles at a later time

 

4. Insert an image

Click on the image button on the toolbar

Click on "Choose File"

Click desktop

Find the folder with your image and open it

Choose your image and click open

Click on OK to insert the image onto your page

Use indent tools to center picture

 

5. Resize images

Double click on image

On the editing window chose custom size

Using the pop down menu choose "% of window"

Set a percentage number

Click OK

 

6. Write caption below picture

Write paragraph about your class project

Align paragraph with the image using the indent tools on the toolbar

You may need to use the RETURN Key at the end of lines

Choose font and size

 

7. Spell check

Use button on toolbar

 

8. Insert horizontal line

Between the title and your image, add a line

Click button on toolbar

Set the size of the line as you wish

 

9a Insert links to your students work

Click the links button on toolbar

In the link window write name of the link in the "Link Text" box

Write the file name in the box in the form of

laquisha.html

Write a description of the link

 

9b. Insert links to other web sites

Before doing this find a WEB site you wish to link to

Write down the address of the page

Click in links button on toolbar

In the link window write name of the link in the "Link Text" box

Write the address in the "URL" box in the form of

www.laep.org

Write a description of links

 

10. Set Background / text / link color / image

Click format on the Netscape menu bar

Slide down to "Page Properties"

Click on "Use Custom Colors"

Pick colors for all text and links

If you wish to have a picture as your background

Click on the image button

On the menu that pops up make sure you are at your folder

Chose the image and click open

Click on OK

Save document

 

11. View as a WEB page

Click the Viewing button on the document toolbar (looks like ship's

wheel)

 

12. Publish the document

You will transfer your folder to a WEB server

You will then be able to see the page you created on the WEB

from any computer in the world that has an Internet connection

and a WEB Browser. Please talk to your Technology Coordinator

about publishing to the Web
