California Missions Web Site

Welcome to the California Missions Web Site. Much of California's history began with the Spanish Missions. Every one of the California missions tell a story about the history of California. A brief history of each mission is presented here.

Welcome to the California Missions virtual tour!

We have full pictorial histories of the missions. Also, for the first time on the web, we have music written by the Franciscan Friars and Native Americans who founded the missions in the late 1700's.

California Mission Internet Trail

This site is being constructed by students up and down the state of California to serve as a central resource for information on the California Missions. The effort is being coordinated by Pioneer School and Oak Hill School in Escondido, California as part of the State Building the Future Project.

ThinkQuest: Spanish Missions of California

Created by students at Mission Viejo High School in California. Take a virtual tour of a real Spanish Mission, and learn why they were an important part of California's history. Read about the everyday life of those who lived and worked here: the priests, the soldiers, and the native people. There's even a recipe for pozole, a common food served during those times. This site is rich with facts, photographs, maps, and audio tour guide readings. Need help with unfamiliar words? Check the hyperlinked glossary.

A Photo Tour of the California Missions

You may already know that there are 21 missions today in the state of California. If you live in California, there is a good chance that you are within an hour's drive of one or more of the missions. Starting in San Diego, and dotting the coast all the way past San Francisco, the missions are a standing reminder of an earlier time, a time long past, when the Spanish were colonizing Alta California. They teach us of the introduction of Europeans to the California Native Americans, and the struggles that both groups would endure.

Cyber Serra

We hope you will enjoy the Newhall Elementary Cyber Serra virtual Mission tour, presented by Mrs. Ried's 1997-1998 4th grade class.
