The North Hollywood High School Highly Gifted Magnet
(HGM) Math Department web page was created by students to
showcase many of the interesting projects that our math
students do each year. After viewing the site, please
take the time to send us your comments to Gail Grande--HGM
math teacher.
The
Curves project, in which students first contructed
basic curves such as the lemniscate, nephroid, parabola,
and limaÁon using a computer program known as the
Geometer's Sketchpad, then went mad and created their own
freakish curves, such as the Fungoid and Tuberoid.
The
Islamic Tile project, an interdisciplinary activity
formerly done by the Sophomore class and now done by the
Freshmen. These students construct Islamic-style
geometric patterns using only a compass and straightedge,
then paint them on tiles, which are glazed, put in wooden
frames, and sold as trivets to the students who made them
as a fund-raising project.
The Polyhedral
Cartography project - imagine Earth as a tetrahedron,
or a dodecahedron, or a rhombicosidodecahedron, or a snub
cube. Starting last year, the BC Calculus class as an
enrichment activity projected a map of the earth onto
their choice of regular or semiregular polyhedron.
The Stellated
Icosahedra are not a new rock band, but the things
one will find hanging from the ceiling of the math room.
They were lovingly hand-crafted from plastic drinking
straws by the Geometry class.
One of the most striking features
of the campus are the murals,
which are the winning entries in a modular arithmetic art
contest held each year.
We have made various tesselations, some of which were
entered in a tesselation contest.
Our
origami division specializes in Origami
polyhedra.
Another
project by the BC Calculus class is the Slicing project, which is a
physical representation of a type of solid whose volume
can be found using calculus.
The Stock Project
involves the Statistics class in a real-world stock
tracking adventure. The students are responsible for
gathering data and even earning profit.
We have a Polyhedra Page,
which is not actually a project but an informational page
so that the reader can better understand several of the
projects.
The Quilt Project.
