Melvin Ave. Elementary School for Advanced Studies was created to meet the needs of gifted and talented students by providing a challenging program that emphasizes student achievement and academic competence. Our program serves an ethnically and culturally diverse population in grades K-5. Melvin was recognized by Governor Gray Davis as a shining example of educational reform in his State of the State Address. The school for Advanced Studies at Melvin Ave. offers a caring environment to nurture your child's potential by providing an enriching and innovative curriculum designed to meet the individual needs of each student. The emphasis of our program is on experimentation and hands-on involvement.

Parent and Community Involvement

An atmosphere of open communication where parents are encouraged to visit and observe classroom projects allows for parental input and feedback. Biannual parent meetings keep parents informed on the goals and philosophy of the program. The SAS parent representative acts a s a liaison between parents and staff.

Enrichment Opportunities

the SAS program at Melvin Ave. offers a wide variety of enrichment opportunities. Students have access to activities and programs that enliven the academic experience. Current programs at Melvin include:

Technology

Students in the SAS program have access to the latest in technology. Multiple computers in the classrooms in access to technology on a daily basis. Students don't have to wait for their turn in a computer lab.

Curricula Field Trips

The teaching staff at Melvin Ave. is committed to offering their students an educational experience that they will remember the rest of their lives. Each year students in the upper primary grades are offered a chance to extend their learning experience by participating in an off campus curricular field trip. Past trips have included:
