Through the Odyssey, Lesson 3:
Time Frame: 3 hours Grade: 9
 
Abstract:
 
Students create a PowerPoint Presentation using all the information and assignments from the previous two lessons. They add a new written assignment in which they compare Odysseus's obstacles with those from their own lives.
 
NCTE Standards:
 
Standard 3. Students apply a wide range of strategies to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate texts. They draw on their prior experience, their interactions with other readers and writers, their knowledge of word meaning and of other texts, their word identification strategies, and their understanding of textual features (e.g., sound-letter correspondence, sentence structure, context, graphics).
Standard 4. Students adjust their use of spoken, written, and visual language (e.g., conventions, style, vocabulary) to communicate effectively with a variety of audiences and for different purposes.

Students use technology tools to enhance learning, increase productivity, and promote creativity. Students use productivity tools to collaborate in constructing technology-enhanced models, preparing publications, and producing other creative works.
 
Pre-requisite Skills
 
Students must know how to read and write, type, file saving and following directions is a must.
 
Teacher Information
 
You will need computers with Microsoft PowerPoint and a LCD projector.
 
Assessment
 
The presentations must be well organized, free of spelling errors and when the pupil presents he/she must provide an understanding of all the information the project incorporates.
 
Student Activities
 
Students will create a PowerPoint Presentation by following the given directions
 

Activity 1 Students pair up and go through the following directions that must be given as a handout:

Activity 2 Individually students will add A new slide. Students create a slide entitled "My personal Odyssey" in which they compare obstacles they have encountered or will encounter with those of Odysseus. The composition dies not need to be lengthy but it must present a clear comparison and understanding of the obstacles the pupil writes about. View your slide show.
Pair the students into groups of two that check each other's presentation, making sure that everything flows well.
 
Activity 3 Each student presents his/her slides to the class with a brief narrative about the presentation. In their narrative they must answer the following, but are not limited to it:
Which is your favorite slide? Why?
Which was your least favorite slide? Why?
Which slide did you have most trouble with? Why?
What did the Odyssey teach you about life, and the obstacles we face?
 
Technology Requirements/Integration
 
Students demonstrate a sound understanding of the nature and operation of technology systems. Students are proficient in the use of technology by created an organized multi media presentation that incorporates all the assignments from the previous two lessons. Students learn how to use technology as a presentation tool.
