Description of the Unit

In this unit students are learning the principles of heredity by observing the offspring of fruit flies with specific genetic characteristics such as eye color and wing length. Over a period of several weeks, the students are participating in "virtual" lab studies on the Web, and "real" lab studies mentored by college student volunteers under a partnership with the University of Southern California's On-Ramp Program.

By collecting and analyzing data from several generations of Fruit Flies, Manual Arts students construct their own knowledge of the principles of heredity.
