A World of Possibilities

Gary Serbeniuk wants to expose his students to science professionals who are actually doing field research on the same subjects his students are studying. His motivation is to open up the world of research possibilities for students, and to give them access to resources "other than me."

For Gary's Marine Biology students, this became tangible through Cheryl Baduini, a graduate student at the University of California at Irvine, who is working on a Ph.D. and has her master's degree on whale sharks. Cheryl came to Manual Arts to share her expertise on shark diversity.

As Cheryl presented to Gary's class, the videoconferencing equipment was connected to Dave Lindahl's class at Century High School in Santa Ana. This gave Gary and Dave's students the opportunity to connect both with a field research professional and with students from another school.

"I'm just beginning to learn this process and equipment so that I can put the kids in touch with professionals who are doing real research." Gary Serbeniuk

What Gary ultimately wants is to tie the videoconferencing and Internet research into long-term research projects. Students will write a scientific paper after spending 3-4 weeks reviewing the literature and communicating with people who are doing field research on the same topic. "Say we're covering marine mammals. Then I'm going to set the kids up with marine mammal experts who they can talk to and get information from." Gary acknowledges this is sometimes easier said than done. "It's kind of like having the first telephone. It's hard to find people to talk to." He's hoping to be able to find people all over the world who are willing to share their expertise and knowledge of cutting-edge research with his students.
