LA High School Varsity Soccer Team secured a 3rd place finish after a thrilling season 2002-2003.

The young guns of LA High established the Romans as a serious Championship force with a free flowing goal scoring side that finished with a 17-3 record (14-1 in regular season).

The highlights can be argued over but who can forget the come back against Fremont HS in the quaster finals of the CIF Championship. At half time the Romans were 1-3 down, then a Sung Kim inspired comeback saw the team triumph 7-3.

The grace and flowing style of the 3rd place game entertained the UCLA crowds, and visiting coaches alike. The first win of the season at University HS, where although kicked, bruised and hampered by sub-standard referees, a 75th minute goal by Sung Kim broke the game in the Romans favor. The team sacrafice and determination showed in the ensueing celebratory pile up. At that point Mannion knew he had a special team on his hands.

Perhaps another highlight was when other coaches and University selectors began visiting The Romans' home games. The LA Times too began to pay attention.

Sung was to feature in the saddest moment of the season with his serious injury, with his last kick in the semi final vs Locke. The glorious headed goal from Gerson Paredes, which broaught the Romans back into the game, was tinged with sadness as Sung who had made the cross was studded and had to be carried off.

For the Team

The coming season will demand more skill and committment and depend even more on the maturity and team spirit than this passed year. Grades have to be maintained and improved. Team sacrefice and disciplened hard effort will have tobe ever present to avoid complacency. We expect to win the Championship, but nobody is going to give it to us. We have to take it.

Selection is open. Nobody has reserved seat at the party. Respect the team and respect the sport and your part in improving it here in LA.

Many thanks to all the teachers and staff from LA High School who have helped the team members and general development of the club. Special mentions to Ms Patel, Mr White, Mr Mendez, Mr Coronado, Mr Molina, Oldemar, Mr Simmons, Ms Brand, Mr Whitefield, Mr Langton, Mr. Miura, and all the folks who cheered at the games.

Mr. Mannion will be the new head soccer coach this year at LA High. After a successfull season last year which led to a trip to the playoffs, we have high expectations for the soccer team this year, with the direction of Mr. Mannion taking charge of the soccer team they will have the discipline and the adequate training to succeed. Mannion's British background and experience should be the X-factor in taking our team to the top. He will be a great asset to this young and exciting team. There will be a soccer league at LA High during the summer before the regular season takes place in winter.

With this in mind Los Angeles High School student have taken the liberty of producing a completely new addition to the L.A High web site! This new advent of the L.A High web site will feature many new topics relating to the world renowned sport known as soccer. This site includes tutorials on coaching, rudimentary skills, plays, and soccer comedy.
