Mr. Carey received his Bachelors degree from UC Santa Barbara and both his Masters degrees from Loyola Marymount University. His advanced degrees are in Administration and Counseling and he has credentials in both those areas also. Mr. Carey resides in Manhattan Beach and has been a LA County Lifeguard for over 30 years. His goal is to increase the course content of the magnet and expand an already successful AP program.

Bob Carey, magnet coordinator and counselor has been at Los Angeles High since 1970. He started soon after receiving his teaching credential from UC Santa Barbara. Carey was a social studies and health instructor for five years and also coached the varsity swim team. In 1975 he became a Dean and remained in that position for four years. He then became a counselor in 1979 and served in that capacity until taking over the magnet school in Fall of 1985. The magnet which was founded in 1981 has grown substantially over the years. In 1994 the magnet expanded to include the ninth grade with the advent of reconfiguration. The total student capacity is now set at 317 with 13 teachers. The magnet cannot get any larger because of the size of the regular LA High student body.

Originally the magnet was a college incentive program but changed its focus and was retitled Math/Science/Technology in 1994. This renaming does not mean that academic subjects such as English, foreign language, and social studies are de-emphasized. The highly touted LA High Academic Decathlon team is comprised entirely of magnet students.    Learn about the Magnet Faculty.
