ABOUT LORETO
LEARN At Loreto elementary reform in teaching and learning and an increase in parental involvement in the schooling process are schoolwide goals. In 1994 the school community joined LEARN--Los Angeles Educational Alliance for Restructuring Now--to reform many of the educational practices that historically have impeded academic achievement and underrepresentation in college for Latinos and other minority students. With these goals in mind the school community developed two STUDENT OUTCOMES for all students to reach by the end of fifth grade:
Creating a climate that nurtures student learning and values the family's culture and community, serves as the foundation for raising student achievement. In this context, teachers and parents are required to reexamine expectations and aspirations. Loreto staff, parents, and community partners are determined to decrease the 50% high school dropout rate. Parents are considered partners in the educational and governance process. Teachers and parents together study and learn about constructivistic practices, science and math teaching strategies, and college requirements. Inquiry science coupled with the fine arts are the focus academic areas for Loreto students. |
