Community Based English Tutoring                         Lesson 4 Outline

OBJECTIVES:   Students will be able to list ingredients for a food dish and shop for groceries as a learning experience.

INTRODUCTION:              1.             FAVORITE DISH (interview)

(15    min)                                               

·         In their notebook have students create two columns.  Column #1 will be the name column.  Column #2 will be favorite dish column. 

·         Teach the appropriate questions: What’s your name?  What’s your favorite dish?  Make sure to explain “dish”.

·         Have the students interview each other, and fill in the columns.

 

REFLECTIONS:  1.             STUDY HABIT CHECKLIST

(25 min)                                                  Review the 7 study habits from the prior weeks.  Make sure to hold the students accountable by making two lists “I did” and “I didn’t”.  Discuss any concerns.

2.                    TEACHER VISIT

Go over any teacher visits.

3.                    READING STRATEGIES

Discuss the out come of using the reading strategies.  Go over things that worked and things the student or children had problems with.

 

SHOPPING

ACTIVITIES:                       With each of these activities, make sure to go over the appropriate knowledge/skills required. 

(60 min)                                  Go over each of the activities as if a real situation.

                1.             ACTIVITY #1 – Creating a shopping list.

The students will write their favorite dish (from introduction) on an index card.  On the other side, they will create a list of ingredients, and share their answers.

 

2.                    ACTIVITY #2 – Guess the price

The students will have their child guess the price of each of the items on the ingredient list.  Have the child find the item in the market, and determine the real price.

 

 

3.                    ACTIVITY #3 – Add it up

The students will have their child write the real prices next to the item.  Once all of the prices are determined, the child will add up all the prices and compare with the receipt.

 

COMPREHENSION

CHECK:                                                DICTATION

(10 min)                                                  Dictate 5 items that were already practiced, and their prices.  Have the students add up the total.
