Community Based English Tutoring                        Lesson 3 Outline

OBJECTIVES:   -Students will be able to utilize reading strategies with their children

Supplemental Materials:booklet- The Enormous Turnip, Sue Arengo

INTRODUCTION:      CBET FOLDER

(10 min)                        1.  Create a personalized cover, using information such as student’s and child’s name, CBET logo, etc.

 

2.                   Update folders, making sure any new material (i.e. teacher visit) is added in an organized matter.

 

REVIEW STUDY

HABITS:                      Review these study habits from the previous class.  Create a student checklist that

(20 min)                        shows which study habits they utilized during the past week.

 

·                     Provide a study place that can accommodate good study environment.

·                     Make sure there is easy access to necessary supplies.

·                     Create a set study time.

·                     Teach time management by making schedules.

·                     Review homework.  Do not do it for the child.  Check homework after it is completed.

·                     Help study for tests, by asking questions and reviewing material.

·                     Review schoolwork and daily activities.  Ask “How was school?”

 

TEACHER VISIT

UPDATE:                      Ask the students to share their teacher visit experience.  What worked well?  Was

(30 min)                        there a problem?  Make sure students explore all aspects of the visit, so as other students may learn from the various experiences.

 

READING

STRATEGIES:            Use “THE ENORMOUS TURNIP”  retold by , Sue Arengo.  Please look at the

(45 min)                        attached handout for this section.

                                   

 

COMPREHENSION

CHECK(10 min):            Ask students simple question about reading strategies.  (i.e. What is the first step of reading strategies?  What is a picture walk?)
