HIEROGLYPHICS
Hieroglyphs began representing clusters of sounds. A picture of a bee , for example, indicates a syllable that was pronounced bet. However, some hieroglyphs had pictographs which denoted the entire word . A sentence written in Egyptian could be a baffling mix of phonetic symbols with what linguists call idea grams .
This system became more ornate about 2,900 BC , when scribes divided the script called 'neuritic second clump' into a chart , in which the hieroglyphics signs were simplified. It is and it isn't like cursive handwriting. Hieroglyphs are written in rows or columns, and, can be read from left to right or from right to left.
