Fishing and the Nile
The marshlands that bordered the Nile were rich with waterfowl, fish, and plant life. Ancient Egypt is often called ''The Gift of the Nile". The Nile River provided water and topsoil for the farms of Egypt. Every summer when the Nile overflowed its banks, it spread rich black earth over the sandy soil. As the flood waters slowly, receded, farmers worked the soil and planted seed. Several months later, the crops of wheat, barley, and vegetables were ready for harvest. All the crops belonged to the Pharaoh, who distributed them to his people.
