The Culture of the Nile
There are ancient legends about the Nile river. The Egyptians depend on the flooding of the Nile River. There are two different times for the Nile, the high and low Nile. Some years there are high Niles; when food would grow due to the overflow of water. Other years there are low Niles; that is when fields are dry and there is little food. The legend tells of a time of the low Niles, when Egypt had seven years of famine. The time fell during the reign of King Zoser in 2600s BC. He saw his people starving and he had no control over the dry season; since the Nile is Egypt's lifeline. Without it, all of Egypt would be desert. It is the longest river in the whole world. It extends out to about 4,000 miles. Along the Nile, are water-ways called channels. The water also forms waterfalls and rapids called cataracts. The first cataracts made the southern boundary of Ancient Egypt. From that Cataracts it flows North 600 miles. If flows South of what is Cairo. The people who lived there 4,000 years ago made use of this fertile land.
