Sample objectives for a robotics class

The math/tech class was designed to teach math using an interdisciplinary curriculum. The year is divided up into a series of projects. The main objectives of each project is to show the students the interdisciplinary nature of education and the practical uses of our "everyday" lessons.

A sample project is to build a ferris wheel. By dividing the class into smaller groups of 3/4 students we use the dynamics of cooperative learning. Language difficulties are considered and balanced for, as well as strengths in subject area.

Specific objectives include:

1. Social studies

1.1 Trace the history of the Ferris Wheel

1.2 Consider other inventions appearing at the same time

2. English

2.1 Learn research skills

2.1 Learn report setup and writing

3. Computer Technology

3.1 Learn research skills involving telecommunication

3.2 Use Word Processing programs to type reports

3.3 Use scanners to put pictures in reports

3.4 Use computers to program Robots

4. Science

4.1 Discuss speed of Ferris Wheel and use of gears system

4.2 Discuss electric eye and timer controls

4.3 Discuss centrifugal and centripetal force

5. Math

5.1 Use problem solving techniques to build the robot (model)

5.2 Use addition and multiplication with decimals to calculate number of blocks utilized and cost of materials.

5.3 Learn how to compute sales tax and round decimals to the nearest cent.

5.4 Learn how to write checks to pay for materials (and balance a checkbook)

5.5 Use proportions to scale down the size of the actual Ferris Wheel

5.6 Use equations and formulas to determine the circumference and speed of Ferris Wheel

Each project is designed to run 10-12 days. A typed report is due and the project is presented to the class which helps to improve student communication skills. At this time the students have the opportunity to see each others projects, decide on their next project and work on improvements.

The teacher becomes a resource person. They may teach equation solving, demonstrate research skills, correct the English in a report or just offer words of support for a job well done.

Evaluation is accomplished through ongoing observation of individual and group participation, written reports, originality and written tests on common ideas in all projects( i.e. equation solving, calculating sales tax, rounding decimals...).
