Dear Student and Parents:

The purpose of this letter is to explain the Summer Reading Program of the English Department of King/Drew Magnet High School, a requirement for all K/D students.  Our staff is committed to preparing students for the rigors and competition of college and university admissions and, later, of scholarly writing. Additionally, we want to ensure that our students meet the California Reading/Language Arts Standards which require them to read two million words annually by their senior year in high school. Summer reading also serves as an excellent vocabulary and reading improvement program that helps students become better writers and test takers, according to the research of a nationally recognized scholar, Dr. Stephen Krashen of USC.

Every student is required to read the two core literature selections (novels) appropriate for her/his grade level (list attached).

The core books were chosen for challenging content, stylistic qualities, and entertainment value. They were selected by grade level teachers to support the thematic purposes of their classes. All students must complete assignments based on the summer reading which will count as a significant part of their first semester grade. These assignments include the "One Pager" a one page analytical and creative response (one for each book), due the first week of school, and an essay, which will be assigned during the opening weeks of the school. (Note: All students should have finished reading their books and creating the One Pagers before school starts!)

To avoid costs, you might prefer to borrow books from the public library. Otherwise they may be purchased at most bookstores, such as Borders, Barnes & Noble, or on-line at Amazon.com. You may also purchase them at a special discount for K/D students at Eso Won Books, 4331 Degnan Blvd. in Leimert Park, Los Angeles, CA. 90008. Phone: (323) 290-1048.

Parents, please read the directions for the one page assignment (the One Pager) on the reverse side of the reading list with your son or daughter to ensure that everyoneunderstands the requirements. In addition, kindly sign at the bottom of this letter to confirm that you and your child have reviewed these materials. We thank you in advance for your support and look forward to an exciting and successful school year for our K/D students.
