Ernie Roy
Tribute to our late principal

Dr. Roy was born October 4, 1943, in Muskogee, Oklahoma to Hester Bunton-Roy and Ernie Roy Sr. He was one of six children. Ernie’s mother worked as a maid. His father was a hospital orderly.

Growing up in the ‘50s under Jim Crow laws, Dr. Roy endured experiences that would remain with him throughout his life. He would never forget working alongside his mother and aunt, picking cotton and spinach to help his family survive, or the experience of drinking from a “colored” water fountain. He would never forget the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and the passion with which King and other leaders fought to improve the lives of people of color in this nation.

By the time Dr. Roy entered high school, integration had come to Muskogee; his was among the first class to attend a mixed school. But little had changed in the minds of some of the faculty. Dr. Roy wanted to become a physician; his high school counselor suggested he would be wasting his time. Trusting his own vision, Dr. Roy enrolled in Langston University. He majored in Biology and decided he would become a teacher.
After a year of teaching in Muskogee, Dr. Roy left Oklahoma for California. He began teaching at Foshay Junior High School in 1967. Science was his passion, and he worked hard to expose his students to the joys and challenges of the fields.

After 12 years at Foshay, Dr. Roy left and taught for three years at Portola Junior High School’s Highly Gifted Mini Magnet in Tarzana. In 1983 he began working at King/Drew Medical Magnet High School. He helped lay the foundation for our school that has earned distinction for it’s rigorous curriculum. Dr. Roy arranged for high school students to spend time in the hospital observing and talking to doctors. King/Drew students not only had the experience in the hospital, but many conducted advanced research at the university laboratories. Among teachers and students, Dr. Roy was known as a man of action who went to whatever lengths necessary to aid his students and staff in their endeavors. We will continue to honor his dream and fulfill his legacy.
