First Step -- Decide what California Sate Content Standard(s) will be taught in the unit.

Second Step -– Choose a performance standard that will demonstrate mastery of the content standards. Describe the final product.

Third Step -- Develop a rubric describing products that meet and exceed the standards. Begin by describing products that meet the standard.

3 – Meets the Standard What evidence will show that this student has met the standards taught in this unit?	4 – Exceeds the Standard What evidence will show that this student has exceeded the standards taught in this unit?

Fourth Step -- Assess what knowledge is needed to achieve mastery of the standards. Figure out what your students already know and what they need to learn for success. Even though we urge you to create units with other teachers, this step must be done for each class.

Fifth Step -- Based on what students need to learn to create work that demonstrates mastery of the standard, develop learning blocks. Different classes will need additional learning blocks for success. Other classes may not need certain learning blocks because of past success.
