Computer Supply Ordering Information

for Department Chairs and Co-Chairs, Coordinators and Administrators

Updated April  2005 v 10.0

By K. Ballash, Tech Coordinator

When you obtain donated or purchased computers, don't forget to order all the support accessories and replacement supplies from your dept. IMA  accounts. For example you may need to order tables, printers, replacement keyboards, mice, mouse balls, paper, printer ribbons and cartridges, etc. Here are a few suggestions. I have also included vendor names and prices on packets that I have distributed previously to depts. Please contact me before you order supplies since if I can arrange a group order with another dept. often we can reduce your cost.

Mice and Printer Cartridges

The most common items that Departments must replace are mice and keyboards.  If only the ball is missing and the mouse clip is usable, order the mouse balls for $4.95 from T.D. Curran. If the clip is missing and/or the mouse is damaged, order replacement optical PS/2 mice from Robyn Musicant, CDW-G, Labtec 3-button optical, PS/2,   SKU: 492383, $9.00. Call 800-696-1727 X7157 to verify the price. CDW-G offers keyboards and other supplies too. You can also get the replacement optical mice and keyboards for iMacs and Windows PCs from T.D. Curran (LAUSD vendor  #132346).

For Laser printer cartridges not carried in the LAUSD supply catalog, try KIS ( LAUSD vendor #110209 ) at 562-942-0338, Sophia Lin,  or  Coast Computer Products, 1740 W. Katella Ave., Ste. A.,Orange, CA 92867, Rep: Jack Grimshaw, Ph: 800-654-6393 x115.

Printer Cartridges, Network Cards, Cables, Keyboards, RAM

In most cases we want to work out an overall plan using networked printers to reduce you dept. annual costs. Too many inkjet printers, for example, will quickly deplete your department's IMA account in paper and ink cartridge costs. For most computer accessories including keyboards, cables, mice, printers, etc., contact ...

S-Video Cables

Now that TVs with S-Video ports are installed in many classrooms, and many teacher computers have the S-Video out port too, Departments should purchase the S-Video cables so the teacher can display student and teacher work on the TV. Pictures and illustrations work best. Small print not so well. Brad at Wards Furniture (vendor code 146746) can help you with S-VHS cables (ph: 562-591-2314). Prices as of Sept. 2002 were

VCRs and DVD Players

Departments may also be interested in switching out some VCRs for a DVD/VCR combination unit from Wards, Zenith XBV423 for $219. This unit also has CD-R,RW playablity which is important for showing possible teacher or student created work on CDs. Call Brad at Wards Furniture (vendor code 146746), ph: 562-591-2314.

SOFTWARE

Consider first Opensource software. It is free and you can make copies for students too. OpenOffice in place of MS Office, AbiWord word processor in place of MS Word, GIMP in place of Photoshop, and Irfanview (free but not opensource) for basic digital image viewing and editing. See also The Open CD.org.

For commercial software we try to submit  group orders. This way we can get  reduced educational prices for MS Office 2000  Pro, for example, at around $50 per license. Our standard software install on workstations is MS Office 2000 Pro, Netscape Communicator for web page and presentations (free), Norton Anitivirus (NAV) (free from LAUSD). Other special software can be purchased in quantity. For example Adobe Photoshop is about $140 in orders of 10 or more. Please contact me (jefferson-hs@lausd.k12.ca.us)  first BEFORE you purchase any software, and see our software catalogs.
