 DECISION TIME

Now that acceptances are coming in you should start narrowing down the college that you want to attend.  Once you have decided and sent in your INTENT TO REGISTER FORM to THE COLLEGE, it is your responsibility to notify the other colleges who accepted you so someone who really wants to be there and was waitlisted can go in your place.  Inform all admissions offices of your decision.  MAY 1ST IS THE DEADLINE.

TRANSCRIPT REQUESTS

Some CSU’s are requiring an official transcript with SAT and/or ACT test scores NOW before they will admit you.  7th semester grades will not be available until February.  You may request a transcript from the College Center with a Transcript Request Form.  Check Test Scores.  Make sure that we have them here.  If you want a transcript for a scholarship, put SELF in the space where it says “Institution”. Transcripts will be prepared and mailed on Fridays.

TESTING INFORMATION

Check online at www.collegeboard.com and www.actstudents.org. Take advantage of all the Free Stuff. Get a FEE WAIVER APPLICATION to bring in to the College Center.  If you have already taken either one of these exams, you already have one on file. You must send in the ACT fee waiver to qualify. 

 

CSU TESTS

The CSU’s require two tests of your Entry Level Math (ELM) skills and for English Placement (EPT).  These tests are given in the Los Angeles area at CSULA, CSUDH and CSULB.  Even if you are not attending these specific CSU’s the test results can be transferred to the school you plan to attend. 

 

There is a fee of $18.00 for each test – a total of $36.00 must be paid by check or money order and there are no fee waivers.

DANGER!!

 

A DREADED DISEASE IS RUNNING RAMPANT THROUGH THE

CLASS OF 2008!!!  It’s worse than the AVIAN flu! More dangerous than hepatitis.  More costly

 than acne and more FUTURE THREATENING THAN AIDS!  There is hope for a cure,

 but the only chance for survival is prevention.  AVOID AT ALL COSTS THE DREAD

         SENIORITIS

WARNING SIGNS: Increased desire to sleep in instead of getting to first period on   

time, to take extended lunches with close friends,  to skip classes that SEEM unimportant,

            to take up refuge or hide in places where you think teachers won’t catch you or will think

you’re on an important mission, to make up excuses to go anywhere but class, not to do

homework, forget to study for tests, procrastinate and forget to complete and send in

Scholarship applications, FAFSA’s and college and university applications.

 

PREVENTION:  Go to every class, every day, on time. Pay attention.  Make sure you

are passing everything well.  You still have a few months left and you are in the home

stretch, but REMEMBER, IF YOU HAVE EARNED A ‘D’  OR A FAIL, IN A UC

CORE COURSE, EVEN IN YOUR LAST SEMESTER… YOUR UNIVERSITY

MAY DIS-ENROLL  YOU!!  IF YOUR FALL GRADES WERE NOT WHAT THEY

SHOULD HAVE BEEN,  write a letter explaining what happened and how you intend

to fix it.  YOU might give admissions a call TOO!  AVOID THE TEMPTATIONS AND

All scholarship material that I receive will be located in a file drawer marked THE DRAWER.  It is in plain view and it contains the most recent scholarship applications.  A list of the most recent scholarships will be posted outside the College Center with a brief description, requirements, amount to be awarded and the deadline.  They will be filed in THE DRAWER by number.

 

A word of warning to you all… PLEASE DO NOT SUBSCRIBE TO ANY SCHOLARSHI8P SEARCH COMPANIES THAT CHARGE FOR SERVICES!!!!  I will have lots and lots of scholarships available for you that will produce better results.  These companies often ask for a fee between $30 and $1,000.  You will receive the same information from me for FREE.  Save your money for your Senior Activities.  Use www.fastweb.com or www.ScholarshipExperts.com.

 

FOSTER YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP LIST  CHECK the folder marked FOSTER YOUTH SCHOLARSHIPS at the front of THE DRAWER.  There are over 30 scholarships listed for students who are in Foster care. 

 

EVEN IF YOU ARE AN AB540 STUDENT  APPLY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS – CHECK THE ELIGIBILITY part of the  scholarship description.  If it does not say anything about citizenship or residency APPLY!  EVERYBODY  – LOTS OF MONEY IS AVAILABLE OUT THERE.  Check www.fastweb.com.  The following scholarship applications are available IN THE DRAWER!

 

3. THOMAS JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP  Amounts vary from $300 to $1,000 to be eligible for school and local community based scholarships that often require only one nomination from the school, complete this simple application so that we may have it on file.  There are no GPA requirements or specific ethnicity requirements though this information is included on the application form.  To be considered for current scholarships ...DEADLINE:  05/15/2008

 

22.  THE AYN RAND INSTITUTE ESSAY CONTESTS THE FOUNTAINHEAD ESSAY CONTEST For 11th and 12th grade students.  AFTER READING THE BOOK THE FOUNTAINHEAD by Ayn Rand. Prizes of up to $5,000 cash will be awarded to students participating in this essay contest.  Essays must be 800 to 1600 words regarding questions and topics dictated on the contest flyer.  Provide a cover sheet with name, address, high school name and address, topic selected, and the year student will graduate. DEADLINE:  04/15/2008

 

23.  ANTHEM ESSAY CONTEST For 9th and 10th grade students.  AFTER READING THE BOOK ANTHEM by Ayn Rand. Prizes of up to $10,000 cash will be awarded to students participating in this essay contest. 600 to 1200 word essay regarding questions dictated on the contest flyer. TAIWAN BUDDHIST TZU CHI FOUNDATION, USA SCHOLARS 2003 open to all seniors a $1,000 scholarship ELIGIBILITY:  GPA 3.0 + unweighted, will enroll in an accredited U.S. college full time for 2003/2004. REQUIREMENTS:  completed application, official transcripts, copies of documents showing financial need, two letters of recommendation, two page essay stating why you should receive a scholarship - personal statement. 71. ECLIPSE - ELEGANT COMMITTED LADIES IN PROMOTING SCHOLASTIC EXCELLENCE offers $1,000 scholarships.  ELIGIBILITY:   African-American, GPA of 2.0+, proof of acceptance to a college or university. CUBAN AMERICAN TEACHERS ASSOCIATION   is offering scholarships of   $300 to $500  ELIGIBILITY:   of Cuban ancestry, speak acceptable Spanish, GPA of 3.0+; demonstrate interest in their heritage, active in school and community affairs.   REQUIREMENTS:   Completed application, transcript including 7th semester, personal statement.  DEADLINE:  04/01/2008

 

 

 

 

76.  THE BILL COGGINS COMMUNITY SERVICE LEADERSHIP AWARD - Sponsored by the Kaiser Permanente Watts Counseling and Learning Center.  Five scholarships of $2,000 will be awarded to outstanding students.  ELIGIBILITY:  Demonstrated commitment to community service leadership within Los Angeles County, can document 300 hours of voluntary community service completed since January 2001 and January 2003, graduating senior GPA 2.5+  REQUIREMENTS:  completed application packet and verification form.  RECEIPT DEADLINE:  04/19/2008

 

77. LOTUS FESTIVAL AND HERITAGE ASIAN/PACIFIC, INC. SCHOLARSHIP  Scholarships of  $300  will be awarded.  ELIGIBILITY:  Legal resident, graduating in 2003, GPA of 2.65+, Demonstrated community service and leadership  REQUIREMENTS:   completed application, essay on involvement in Asian/Pacific Islander community activities, three letters of recommendation, transcript  DEADLINE:  05/09/2008

 

78. CIVIL SERVICE EMPLOYEES INSURANCE COMPANY’S YOUTH AUTOMOBILE SAFETY SCHOLARSHIP Two awards of $1,000  and eight of $500 will be awarded on the basis of essays that propose to reduce the accident rate among teenagers.  ELIGIBILITY:  high school seniors who are children of full-time or retired public employees REQUIREMENTS:   Completed application, essay, transcript, two letters of recommendation, letter of acceptance to a college or university.   DEADLINE:  04/07/2008

SYLVIA MEYERHOFF MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP  A scholarship of $600 (renewable for four year) is awarded to a student graduating from high school and intending to go to a four year university or college.  Preference is given but not limited to young women. ELIGIBILITY:  3.0+ GPA, financial need, community involvement REQUIREMENTS:  completed application, one letter of recommendation, transcripts, essay about reasons for pursuing further education. INGOLDSBY-ESPINOZA SCHOLARSHIP A scholarship of $400 (renewable for four year) awarded to a student graduating and intending to go to a four-year university or college.  Preference is given but not limited to students from a single parent family. ELIGIBILITY:  3.0+ GPA, evidence of personal hardship financial need, community involvement REQUIREMENTS:  completed application, one letter of recommendation, transcripts, essay about reasons for pursuing further education. 85. LUCILE R. YATES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP   Four $500 scholarships will be awarded to female seniors graduating from LAUSD high schools and planning to attend college outside the state of California. 88. CALIFORNIA CREDIT UNION SCHOLARSHIP AWARD  is awarded to students who have given back to their community through service and volunteerism.  REQUIREMENTS:  3.0 GPA, two (2) essays and two (2) letters of recommendation.  Proof of acceptance to an accredited college or university in 2005.

LOS ANGELES ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS (LAASP) MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP   Sponsored by School Psychologists and Special Ed Personnel form LAUSD.  Several scholarships of $300 each will be awarded to qualified seniors. ELIGIBILITY: Plan to enter the educational field, academic excellence, and financial need.  WE MAY SEND ONLY ONE FROM THE SCHOOL. THE CHANGE A LIFE SCHOLARSHIP -   25 scholarships of $5,000 are offered.  We may send only one application  ELIGIBILITY:  GPA of 3.25+, college prep courses, U.S. Citizen or legal resident, above average attendance. 99.  NATWA (NORTH AMERICAN TAIWANESE WOMEN’S ASSOCIATION SCHOLARSHIP TWO Scholarships of $1,000 will be given to seniors who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their activities in school and the community or workplace.  ELIGIBLITY:  senior living in Los Angeles, GPA of 3.0+ low income, motivated,   RQUIREMENTS:  completed application, two letters of recommendation, official transcript. 100.  NATWA SINGLE-MOTHER STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP One $1,000 scholarship is offered to a single-mother regardless of age who will attend college full-time in the fall of 2008. ELIGIBLITY:  single mom, GPA of 2.5+, REQUIREMENTS:  completed application, two essays 1) my future planning 2) What I now about Taiwan of 500-1000 words each, official transcript, two letters of recommendation.
