If you have been accepted to a college or university, please bring a copy of your acceptance letter, email or certificate to the College Center and sign the YELLOW “I GOT ACCEPTED” list. We will post your name in the next Newsletter and announce your name over the P.A.

DECISION TIME

Now that acceptances are coming in you should start narrowing down the college that you want to attend. Once you have decided and sent in your INTENT TO REGISTER FORM to THE COLLEGE, it is your responsibility to notify the other colleges who accepted you so someone who really wants to be there and was waitlisted can go in your place. Inform all admissions offices of your decision. MAY 1^ST IS THE DEADLINE.

TRANSCRIPT REQUESTS

Some CSU’s are requiring an official transcript with SAT and/or ACT test scores NOW before they will admit you. 7^th semester grades will not be available until February. You may request a transcript from the College Center with a Transcript Request Form. Check Test Scores. Make sure that we have them here. If you want a transcript for a scholarship, put SELF in the space where it says “Institution”. Transcripts will be prepared and mailed on Fridays.

Check online at www.collegeboard.com and www.actstudents.org. Take advantage of all the Free Stuff. Get a FEE WAIVER APPLICATION to bring in to the College Center. If you have already taken either one of these exams, you already have one on file. You must send in the ACT fee waiver to qualify.

The CSU’s require two tests of your Entry Level Math (ELM) skills and for English Placement (EPT). These tests are given in the Los Angeles area at CSULA, CSUDH and CSULB. Even if you are not attending these specific CSU’s the test results can be transferred to the school you plan to attend.

There is a fee of $18.00 for each test – a total of $36.00 must be paid by check or money order and there are no fee waivers.

homework, forget to study for tests, procrastinate and forget to complete and send in

PREVENTION: Go to every class, every day, on time. Pay attention. Make sure you

are passing everything well. You still have a few months left and you are in the home

All scholarship material that I receive will be located in a file drawer marked THE DRAWER. It is in plain view and it contains the most recent scholarship applications. A list of the most recent scholarships will be posted outside the College Center with a brief description, requirements, amount to be awarded and the deadline. They will be filed in THE DRAWER by number.

A word of warning to you all… PLEASE DO NOT SUBSCRIBE TO ANY SCHOLARSHI8P SEARCH COMPANIES THAT CHARGE FOR SERVICES!!!! I will have lots and lots of scholarships available for you that will produce better results. These companies often ask for a fee between $30 and $1,000. THOMAS JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP Amounts vary from $300 to $1,000 to be eligible for school and local community based scholarships that often require only one nomination from the school, complete this simple application so that we may have it on file. There are no GPA requirements or specific ethnicity requirements though this information is included on the application form. To be considered for current scholarships ...DEADLINE: 05/15/2008

22. THE AYN RAND INSTITUTE ESSAY CONTESTS THE FOUNTAINHEAD ESSAY CONTEST For 11th and 12th grade students. AFTER READING THE BOOK THE FOUNTAINHEAD by Ayn Rand. 76. THE BILL COGGINS COMMUNITY SERVICE LEADERSHIP AWARD - Sponsored by the Kaiser Permanente Watts Counseling and Learning Center. Five scholarships of $2,000 will be awarded to outstanding students. CIVIL SERVICE EMPLOYEES INSURANCE COMPANY’S YOUTH AUTOMOBILE SAFETY SCHOLARSHIP Two awards of $1,000 and eight of $500 will be awarded on the basis of essays that propose to reduce the accident rate among teenagers. ELIGIBILITY: high school seniors who are children of full-time or retired public employees REQUIREMENTS: Completed application, essay, transcript, two letters of recommendation, letter of acceptance to a college or university. 83. SYLVIA MEYERHOFF MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP A scholarship of $600 (renewable for four year) is awarded to a student graduating from high school and intending to go to a four year university or college. 84. INGOLDSBY-ESPINOZA SCHOLARSHIP A scholarship of $400 (renewable for four year) awarded to a student graduating and intending to go to a four-year university or college. Preference is given but not limited to students from a single parent family. 85. LUCILE R. YATES MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Four $500 scholarships will be awarded to female seniors graduating from LAUSD high schools and planning to attend college outside the state of California. 88. CALIFORNIA CREDIT UNION SCHOLARSHIP AWARD is awarded to students who have given back to their community through service and volunteerism. REQUIREMENTS: 3.0 GPA, two (2) essays and two (2) letters of recommendation. Proof of acceptance to an accredited college or university in 2005.

89. LOS ANGELES ASSOCIATION OF SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS (LAASP) MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Sponsored by School Psychologists and Special Ed Personnel form LAUSD. Several scholarships of $300 each will be awarded to qualified seniors. ELIGIBILITY: Plan to enter the educational field, academic excellence, and financial need. 100. NATWA SINGLE-MOTHER STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP One $1,000 scholarship is offered to a single-mother regardless of age who will attend college full-time in the fall of 2008. CAL SOAP SCHOLARSHIP Awards of $1,000 will be given to students who will be attending college in the Fall of 2008 ELIGIBILITY: Financial need, academic achievement, active participation in Cal SOAP (see Martha Lemus), be graduating. 108. ALPHA LA – ALLIANCE TO PRESERVE TH HISTORY OF WWII IN ASIA – LOS ANGELES ESSAY CONTEST Prizes range from $50.00 to $500.00. Write a 1200 word essay on the Post War behaviors between Germany and Japan and how their behaviors affect the victims, victimized countries and their own future generations OPEN TO STUDENTS IN GRADES 9-12. 109. LOS HERMANOS DE STANFORD SCHOLARSHIP Though sponsored by students at Stanford University, attendance at Stanford is not required. Residency is not considered. Four awards of $400 each will be given to students who have participated in community service. REQUIREMENTS: completed application, official transcripts, one letter of reference, personal statement regarding community service.

110. DOODLE FOR GOOGLE COMPETITION Open to students K-12. Design a Google logo on the open-ended theme “What if…?” The winning design will be used as Google’s logo on May 22, 2008 and the artist will receive $10,000 toward their college education. The winning student’s school will also win a $25,000 technology grant. More information is available at www.google.com/doodle4google DEADLINE: 04/14/2008

111. FILM YOUR ISSUE – FYI SHORT FILM COMPETITION submit your entry online at www.filmyourissue.com. Awards are College Scholarships of $4,000 and four internships at USA Today, United Nations,m PBS’POV, and the Human Society of the United States: VIP Filmmaker Pass and presented at AFI/Discovery Channel Documentary Festival; Film broadcasted to the public through participating venues. Anyone 14 to 24 years old may compete. Films should be no more than 120 seconds in length.

112. ROY ROMER SCHOLARSHIP Awards of $2,500 will be given to two LAUSD graduating seniors whoare recognized for their outstanding achievement and exceptional community service and civic engagement. 113. CONGRESSIONAL ART COMPETITION for 7^th through 12^th grade students. Artwork will hang in the National Capitol for an entire year. This year’s theme is “An Artistic Discovery”. Details are provided in the competition brochure. DEADLINE: 04/01/2008

115. ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY, INC. Alpha Gamma Omega Chapter offeres several college scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $3,000. ELIGIBILITY: young African American women planning to attend a four year institution. AMERICAN MEDICAL TECHNOLOGISTS SCHOLARSHIP awards of for students interested in the Medical Technology Field ELIGIBILITY: must be a high school graduate or a senior in an accredited high school, must pursue a career in Medical Technology. 118. ASSOCIATION OF RAZA EDUCATORS SCHOLARSHIP is offering $20,000 in scholarships to students who are undocumented or underdocumented. NO Residency or GPA is requiredREQUIREMENTS: completed application, three short essays, two letters of refcommendation, official transcriptsw and test scores. RECEIPT DEADLINE: 03/31/08

119. VALLEY YOUTH CHEER AND FOOTBALL SCHOLARSHIP If you have cheered or played football for one complete season with the Valley Youth Conference (for the Crenshaw Cougars, Pasadena Ponies, University Park Trojans, Venice bulldogs, Willowbrook Seminoles, or Wilshire Huskies, etc. ) and will be graduating in 2008 apply for the scholarships of $1,000 REQUIREMENTS: completed application, activities forms, essay about participation, personal qualities form and transcripts. These scholarships posted by MALDEF are in a green binder in THE DRAWER. Anyone can apply for these scholarships, however they do not require a social security number or legal resident status.

ACADEMY OF BUSINESS LEADERSHIP – SUMMER PROGRAM This program is a seven week program that teaches skills, ethics and processes of business, finance and entrepreneurship to empower high school students towards higher education and greater career goals. The program begins on June 26,2008 through August 15, 2008. Any Student 8^th grade through 12^th grade can apply and participate. The program is held on a college campus. Applications are available in the College Center. They want at least three students from Jefferson. DEADLINE: 04/11/2008

CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS FOUNDATION SUMMER LAW INSTITUTE for rising 10^th, 11^th and 12^th grade students who are interested in learning more about the American legal system. Students live on the UCLA campus for seven days and six nights, attend law-related classes and engage in discussions led by university professors. August 3-9, 2008 Scholarships are available COMPLETE application on line at www.crf-usa.org DEADLINE: 04/01/2008

CONGRESSIONAL PAGE PROGRAM For JUNIORS. The program goes from June 8, 2008 to June 23, 2008. Sponsored by Congressman Xavier Becerra. ELIGIBIILTY: must reside in the 31^st Congressional District of California and be a U.S. Citizen.
