Runners Club
The Jefferson High School Runners Club trains students to run the Los Angeles Marathon. The club was organized in 1991 to encourage students who enjoyed running.
The club's goal is to encourage students who join to complete 26.2 miles in the L.A. Marathon.
Each September, interested students come to the international marathon meeting to learn more about how to participate. Students complete forms and get a physical exam to show that they are healthy.
The program begins with a 1 mile "fun run" on the campus of Cal State Northridge. Training events are scheduled every month for students to build up their distances and their strength. Soon students become used to 6 mile funs and even longer races. Then by January students would be able to complete half a marathon (13.1 miles) and meet other runners from other schools around the city. The runners club program training includes an 18 mile "make it or break it" run which is a good test to see how prepared students are for the L.A. Marathon in March.
The Jefferson Runners Club coordinates with the eager "Student Run L.A." organization to give students the opportunity to meet the challenge of running a marathon. Since it's first year, The Jefferson Runners Club has had a "perfect track record". Every student that has signed up to run the L.A. marathon has completed the race! Jefferson runners are strong, dedicated and quick on their feet.
The Club's sponsor is Ms. Wightman, a teacher at Jefferson H.S. who enjoys seeing students reach their goals. The club varies in size from year to year, but Ms. Wightman says "Once a student finishes a marathon, they know they can do whatever they choose to do in the future". She is proud of all the runners and hopes to see the club continue at Jefferson High School for many years to come.
