| Hart Street Elementary School is located in the west San Fernando Valley. Our campus serves approximately 1000 students and operates on a 4 track 90/30 year round calendar. Our parents and community members are active participants in the instructional focus that we have set here through membership in our Title 1 and English Learner Councils as well as our School Site Council and School Based Management Council. Our students are served in grades pre-kindergarten through grade 5 and 7 special education classes. In addition, we are a School for Advanced Studies and offer a differentiated instructional program and open enrollment for qualified students. Our teachers meet weekly in grade level teams to plan a comprehensive academic program which provides equal access to the standards based curriculum for all students. Extensive Professional Development opportunities are provided throughout the school year to insure that our staff is well prepared to deliver a high quality academic program. Classroom approaches to instruction include the use of large and small group activities, cooperative learning, and peer tutoring. Our homework policy consists of specific assignments four days each week for all grade levels. After school homework support is provided to those students who participate in our L.A.'s BEST afterschool program and our Ready Set Go before school program. We use the Open Court Language Arts Series as the basis of our reading program and Harcourt math throughout the grade levels. All classrooms are equipped with 2-8 Internet access computers. In pre-k through grade 2 our English Language Learners also receive additional support in our Riordan Computer Lab which is especially set up to assist with language acquisition. Hart Street staff members have high expectations for all students in the areas of academic achievement, self esteem, and social responsibility. Our dedicated parents work closely with staff to insure that classroom needs are met. Our Parent/ Community Representative regularly schedules parenting classes. To further guarantee that our parents are active participants in the instructional program at Hart Street, we offer parent workshops presented by our math and literacy coaches. Our parents are also invited to attend the Math Night and Literacy Night to not only familiarize them with the district-mandated programs, but offer suggestions they can use in the home to assist their child's academic growth. Our school learning community and shared leadership is strengthened through our parents membership on our Title 1 and English Learners Advisory Committees as well our School Site Council and School Based Management Council.
Many projects have recently changed the physical look of our campus and have provided new learning areas for our students. Through 2 Kirk Douglas Grants and funds from the Neighborhood Matching Grants program we have provided 3 new play areas for our pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, and special education preschoolers. A physical fitness course is available to grades 1-5 on our main playground. Reading lawns are now available for quiet activities at all grade levels. New murals and landscaping take pride in the cultural diversity and background of our multi-talented student body. Hart Street School is always on the move. More changes to enhance the learning environment of our students are planned for the coming year. We are very proud to announce that because of our supportive parents we have raised money to install a soccer/track field which we will see shortly.
We hope that you will be a part of our commitment to make Hart Street School the best place for students to grow and learn.
