Justin 2

One Last Kiss *

Finale and Bows *

*from "Bye, Bye, Birdie!"

When my friends at Granada Hills High asked me to do another MIDI orchestration for their spring musical, I offered it to my Level II class as an extra credit assignment. Only this mature young man took the bait. Under more pressure to excel than anyone else in the group, Justin found a way to crank out all but a few of the 40 pieces from the score to "Bye, Bye, Birdie!" in just a few short weeks. He may never forgive me for getting him into it, but indeed, the experience showed a lot of people just a little of what this 9th-grader can accomplish!

Justin prefers jazz and movie soundtracks over hip hop and rock. He also plays the alto sax for Hamilton's jazz ensembles. In fact, a scheduling conflict with the Jazz A Band will prevent him from being a part of our class in the fall. We wish him well and hope he drops by to visit now and again. - R. Bruning

...UPDATE 2002 - Sometime during the 2000-2001 school year, Justin taught himself how to download the preview/trailer to the film "Pearl Harbor," to strip the audio from it, and, using GigaStudio and Miroslauv Vitous' orchestral samples, composed his own score to the trailer.

Taking full advantage of classroom visits by 20th Century Fox Music's president, he bade Robert Kraft's attention to this work. The ever-gracious Mr. Kraft was mightily impressed.

This led to a summer internship and full-time employment with film composer, David Newman.

In turn, that job led to the appearance of one of Justin's musical cues in the "hot tub" scene of the Fox animated feature "Ice Age." The recording of this piece involved an 80 piece orchestra at the famous Alfred Newman soundstage with Justin himself holding the baton.

All of this was accomplished by a soft-spoken, determined, gentleman before he even turned 18!

We have had to say farewell, as Justin graduated high school in June, but we certainly have not heard the last from him...and neither have you!
